So is there any support for the Honeymooners pic?

I like it.

Is it really an example though? He never actually hit her did he?

That is true, he only threatened to hit her.

Which actually counts for this trope. Actual physical abuse is not require for Domestic Abuse.

It was in a joking manner though

Joking about it is still the trope, just not played as straight. Sure, it's not the best possible option for a pic, but for a trope like this one, it's good.

And while I do wonder about the wisdom of reading a page called Domestic Abuser if you suffer from triggers for it, the old pic was still in bad taste as it was.

The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything.

The pic with the caption was probably in bad taste, sure. The pic by itself was ok imo and shouldn't have been removed.

While the Honeymooners pic might be nice and safe and PC, it really doesn't fit. It's not an example.

Though to be fair I've never actually seen the show, but as I understand it, the "domestic abuse" was always played for laughs.

Is it wrong for this trope to be played for laughs?

No, but a straight example would make a better representation of the trope, as it usually does.

IIRC she abuses him just not physically.... he actually never does anything to her.

It really is not a straight example and really not good for the page.

I vote imageless any image will just be flamebait. (hell IMO this trope is really flamebait in general especially with people having Single-Issue Wonk with Played for Comedy.)

[up][up] Played for Laughs and Played for Drama are two ways to play it straight.

[up] She doesn't abuse him in the pic.

You know, the image on Abusive Parents is Played for Laughs too. The honeymooners pic shows a common way that spouse abuse is portrayed in fiction. Isn't that exactly what we want for a site like TV Tropes?

I vote imageless.

If we really must have an image, I guess 51 is the best so far.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

Voting imageless. The suggested examples either don't seem to really demonstrate the trope terribly clearly, or (like the Simpsons suggestion) make light of what is supposed to be a serious topic.

The Honeymooners is the first thing I thought of before I got to the end of this discussion. It's perfect. It invokes the trope without offering a triggering image. And if it is played for laughs, perhaps that does warrant a second think. Certainly, the trope is viewed differently now versus then; that itself is noteworthy.

Just leave it imageless. We don't really need one for this.

I vote imageless. Just because only a minority of people have been traumatized by domestic abuse, doesn't mean their concerns are worthless or that keeping them as an audience is pointless. Personally, I hate when legitimate concerns are dismissed with a callous "you're in the minority, so you should just have to stay home and hide" attitude.

Imageless, and Honeymooners is not an example of abuse.

This is my vote as well.

[up][up] It's emotional abuse. He threatens to punch his wife in the face every week - that's creating a hostile environment where she fears for her safety.

Also, if you leave this page imageless, but not Prison Rape, that would having a double standard (or something...)

Honeymooners is still a good idea.
