A thread to discuss the Trails Series of video games (known in Japan as the Kiseki series). Adaptations of the games are also on-topic.
As of May 2024, there is no specific spoiler policy for this thread, which means the the default forum spoiler policy
applies.
In summary:
- Spoilers for non-episodic works should remain tagged for a minimum of one month after the work's release.
- Spoilers for episodic works (including any DLC) should remain tagged for one month or until the next instalment releases, whichever is shorter.
There hasn't been much good news in months for people who want more Legend Of Heroes VI in English. Xseed has apparently been translating the second installment for PSP, but no release date yet, and they apparently have not had much sales success. Meanwhile, there have been no official statements about releasing the Windows versions in English.
But thanks to this Andriasang article, I learned that Aeria Games (best known for MMORPGs) plans to release the Trails in the Sky trilogy internationally on smartphones. Some online and social functions will be added to the basic gameplay. No clear indication of what international smartphone platforms just yet.

Yeah they were not in the original Japanese version. In the Japanese version every single one had a separate text file basically saying "It is empty", the writing team saw that and added little quips and puns instead.
By the 3rd they were running out of ideas and actually took to Twitter and took fan suggestions, added trivia about the game, and even wrote entire ministories line by line chest by chest.
The trails games are the one games I love watching blind lets plays and streams of cause I love seeing the reactions of players throughout the game and their opinions on the various events... However none of the actually good streamers and lets players play the games :(

You kinda have to be to go through the shit they did, it's practically a story in of itself to get them here.
As for the art, I'd agree it's a little bland, but the sprites themselves are functional and there's a wide range of character expressions in the portraits, particularly Estelle's that helps convey more on such a limited visual novel-esque interface. That being said, some of the camera work can be quite dramatic and have some cinematic flare, and the end of FC and some scenes in SC get clever with editing stills and tweaking textboxes to good effect.
CS has a much more dynamic camera and can now render and pose 3d models in scenes which makes the movement a lot more fluid. The textures and models are a little dark in comparison and lack the colorful palette of Sky/Zero sprites, but it's over all able to be more creative. The voice acted dialogue also helps.

So here's a different complaint. It's not really a complaint so much as a minor nitpick but eh.
The party train is kinda annoying due to how ambushes work in this game. If an enemy hits anywhere in your party train rather than head-on with your party leader, you get ambushed. There's far more party train than party leader so most of your hitbox for encounters results in ambushes. As a result, you pretty much always have to charge enemies head-on unless you know they're non-aggressive (or they just turned their backs to you) otherwise you're going to get ambushed and that's just a pain.

Yeah, it is a rather annoying thing I personally make sure that I have a Haze quartz equipped at all times once I get it. Haze makes it so enemies do not react to you and you can encounter them at your leisure.
In FC its a pretty low level bracer reward IIRC.

Durante has CS2 PC.. It took him 3 months to fix CS 1 up so figure the release is probably 3 months away.
I agree that it's annoying. Was glad that Cold Steel did away with it.
Remind me, do you still get ambushed if they contact with one of your back characters in the face?
Took that long to get to him? I presume they did the actual porting themselves and Durante plays cleanup and polish then, rather than getting in at the start of it?

Also, that Haze quartz sounds super useful. Looks like that's a good reason to keep doing those side quests. Your rewards for raising your Bracer rank have been pretty useful so far, really.

Yes you still get ambushed, only if the front character hits from the front do you not. Haze is a god send but it still doesn't stop enemies pathing right into you lol.
Yeah the port was done at X Seed, he fixed it up via changing the whole back end and other stuff. Apparently he got CS 1 in May and had it ready late July and it hit steam mid August, so we are probably looking at a similar time table.

Haze is one of those Quartz that stays permanently on my main character in every Trails game once I have it, along with a few others.
Well in FC Bracer rank is a tiny bit more important than that, your rank changes something farther down the line. You only need rank 5 which is harder to not get than get though lol. You get Haze at rank 5 as well.
I do wish that your rank changed things in the later games but sadly they do not.
IIRC, other than completion bonuses, it only affects one scene at the end of SC, right?

In SC the one scene that mentions Estelle's Bracer rank plays out exactly the same way, she claims she is A rank and dares them to call the guild to confirm. The player's points determine if she is actually bluffing or telling the truth.
In Ao she is only a B rank so canonically she would be bluffing.

False. I had a B at that point and Estelle said she had a B. If you have less than B, she lacks authority to do anything and it skips to Cassius.

That's odd seen a stream with her being a C rank and she still said A rank.
Hmm interesting. I gotta look up those versions somewhere then although they are probably not as good as the A rank cause they call bullshit on it.

It may be that the bluff is simply what happens if you have a C.
Or it's some weird New Game Plus interaction, it was a nightmare + run.
Also, if you managed to get all bracer points in the first game you start with a rare Luck quartz that is a godsend if you're the kind of person that likes farming.
The Old Save Bonus in SC really isn't about what you start with, though the Luck quartz is awesome, it's about the extra stuff you get in quests. In SC you can get a quartz that combines Haze and Heal before you get Haze proper.
Yeah, the Call Backs to older sidequests are really awesome.

IIRC the PC ports actually use the PS 3 version sprites instead of the original sprites. The PS 3 version was exactly the same as the originals but in HD, unlike the Vita "updated" version.
