Not the Trope + Suggestion: Do Not Do This Cool Thing

The current image for Do Not Do This Cool Thing is this◊, that is, a sign saying "do not smoke regardless of how cool it will make you look," with a generic "no smoking" sign. The problem is, I think, the trope is about discouraging doing something, but showing that thing along the way as cool. The current image does not show that the thing being discouraged (smoking) is cool. So it's not the trope.

And so, I made a point of making this mock anti-smoking campaign poster to replace it: *

I don't mind the current picture, but Catalogue's picture is even better.

The more often I look at that, Catalogue, the more I am really, really impressed by it. tiny nitpick: I do wish there were more women on it. I see two for sure and one who's androgynous enough that I'm not sure if it's a pretty male or a woman. But that's a tiny nitpick. Maybe plug in Lauren Bacall◊?

I did worry about that when I'm almost finished—had to shoehorn Sedgwick there. But when I think of "women smoking" I didn't get much ideas beyond Hepburn and that girl I, who couldn't recall, who smoked with Bogart. That was... well, Lauren Bacall, wasn't it.

But if we want to add/remove/replace, we better finalise the candidates before returning to the drawing board.

(Speaking of which, who's the androgynous one?)

The caption doesn't quite work. How about "So... don't be awesome then?"

Farthest left in the second to last row. Is it Bob Dylan, Cate Blanchett as Jude in Im Not There, or someone else entirely?

Okay, we don't need to show that many people. I mean, I could have made a massive column when I made the custom pic for Launcher of a Thousand Ships, but kept it down to a few, as it was all I needed.

Uh, pretty sure the suggestions were for replacement options, not a list of additions... just trying to be helpful...

Well let's decide who should be on the list. Perhaps a crowner showing all the pictures, and the top X highest voted entries get in the picture.

This is volunteer work; I think turning suggestions into demands is kind of uncool. Can keep it informal.

I'd really prefer that we let Catalogue choose which, if any he switches out. He's done a beautiful job of choosing pictures that work well in concert. To be a fair crowner, all of the options would have to be re-sized and monochromed the way they would be in the poster, so that we would be voting on the actual image that would be used, as it would appear. That's a lot of work, and like I said, it was really a tiny nitpick.

The artist's judgement trumps everything; do what you want. But, elaborating on the Foxxy Mod's nitpick, IMO *

1x4, 2x4, 3x1, 5x2, 5x4 seem kind of weak. (Especially 3x1 and 5x2, too obviously not a cigarette... The Man With No Name gets a pass for being the pinnacle of coolness.)

Lauren Bacall, Marlene Dietrich, Monica Belucci, Angelina Jolie (#2), Sophia Loren (#2), and Anne Hathaway seem especially "cool".

No, mod vetoes, admin vetoes, and the wiki hive mind are three things that matter more.

For choosing which image to use. Not for making an image.

I don't think they all need to be cigarettes, necessarily. It's supposed to be "don't smoke" not "Don't smoke cigarettes."

I like that there's cigars and cigarillos mixed in there.

I like the Demi Moore one, and Sophia #2 particularly. And Lauren.

The discussion was how we wanted the image that is used to look, not how the artist should have done the suggestion.
