Generally speaking, yes, I agree. One must be confident that the things one writes is, if not necessarily good on its face (no need for narcissism), then at least possesses the reasonable possibility of being executed effectively.

The point is if the writer can't have confidence in himself to decide his own setting, then not much can be done.
If he just thinks a blatant gender flip suddenly makes all of that 'okay' somehow, though, then thats wrong. Not that he doesn't have the right to write fucked up shit, but being Equal Oppurtunity Evil doesn't make it any less fucked up, especially if its token.
