South Park is a billion dollar franchise and the two guys behind it are pretty respected satirists. I can see why Obsidian did it.

Also, MCA is confirmed to NOT be working on this. However, Eric Fenstermaker, the guy who made Vault 11 and Beyond the Beef in Fallout New Vegas is working on it, so that's pretty cool. I guess MCA and Sawyer are busy making their own IP.

Vault 11 and Beyond the Beef?

Makes sense.

But the reason I'm conflicted: Everything about the game itself sounds awesome... except that it's South Park. :|

Well, I mean, there are a few good episoes, but that one with testicular Cancer was just way too disgusting for me to like the show at all.

And the voices are god damn annoying. Which is likely the point, but eh.

I'm really friggin' excited about this game. After reading about that newly posted information, I want to see those screenshots and concept art.

...huh. That's really all the reaction I have on this. Not really a fan of South Park myself, but there's potential here.

I remember when I was browsing /co/ that they mentioned that considering the pedigree they might do "racial bonuses" in a way that incorporates racial stereotypes.

Alright let's run through this list.

-Parker has always preferred silent protagonists in RPG's, so the player’s character will be silent.

-Your character has a smartphone that acts as the primary game menu and has a facebook-like app show your number of friends you have and your current standing with the various kid factions.

Awesome.

-Obsidian is using the Dungeon Siege III engine.

-Obsidian developed a dynamic lip-syncing tool to accommodate changes to the script.

Onyx is a great, stable engine and if it's like DS 3 then there won't be loading screens either.

Changes in script makes me think the quests will have more flavour rather than "Hi I lost X, can you get it? Let me mark it on your map" the way most rpgs these days with VA do. Should be nice to see Quests that have more to them again.

-Many elements of the combat system are like Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi games.

So it's turn based but with player skill in place of dice rolls? I'm ok with that, please allow the player to use their turn to move around the map as well. TB strategy is one of my favourite combat modes but I'm not a big fan of the static TB type combat in JRP Gs (paper mario/mario & luigi have fun combat though I guess...just not sure about it working in a wrpg)

-Parker has been a lifelong gamers, he really likes rpgs... His favorite game is Oblivion.

Ugghhhhhhhhhhhh

he hasn’t played an RPG in year because he got tired of walking everywhere

That...doesn't sound good?

Overall though those descriptions make it sound like it has more rpg elements than most wrpgs these days. Obsidian will nail the quest design and choices in story but I'm not exactly sure about the combat.

Still...looks pretty fun honestly.

The Lotr LARP episode was one of the better episodes in the show and it sounds like that's what it's based the most off.

South Park is a pretty hit or miss show. Some eps are hilarious while others are just terrible but...I dunno this might turn out pretty good.

Still think an Archer or Avatar TLA game would've been better (esp when THQ has the Avatar license)

An Archer game would be fantastic. But people would be all "Wait, didn't Obsidian already make a spy/secret agent game?"

Which is why it would be awesome. It'd be like the Alpha Protocol 2 we never got.

Except that Archer and Alpha Protocol have vastly different themes, style of character and mood...

I wouldn't say the characters are that different.

Yeah Alpha Protocol is overall fairly serious but there are plenty of lighthearted moments and characters like Heck, Brayko, Sie and Thorton himself would totally fit in the Archer setting.

I'll just be crying in the corner.

[up] You could always play the other Wheel Oftime game.

I wouldn't. But you could.

[up][up] Well, I meant one where you actually play as Rand, Mat, Perrin, or at least create your own character. And wasn't an FPS. With pretty new graphics. And was actually good.

I started watching South Park recently. I've seen everything through midway in Season Eight, and the worst any episode has been is "meh". Don't Like? Don't Read! isn't a very good argument, but I don't really see why this is getting so much negative attention from people simply because they don't like South Park.

At first I didn't realize I needed all this stuff...

For the record, Obsidian was only going to be hired as a subcontractor by Red Eagle Games who were going to be the actual devs for Wheel of Time.

I'm not entirely sure what that means but I'm guessing it'd mean Obsidian wouldn't have much creative freedom and would mainly just be there to do a lot of the hard work and programming.

EDIT: Also, Anthony Davis (former Obsidian developer) did some clarification about how much input Obsidian will have in the game and also the upcoming game from Sawyer:

Anthony can you at least tell us if the South Park game is:

A: Completely controlled by Trey & Mark. Obsidian is just the Company that implements everything.

B: It's a "work together" project where both parties work hand in hand together on everything.

C: Obsidian had free reign aside from what Matt & Parker did.

Please just tell me where ca. this project is.

Solidly B. Zane and others proved VERY early that we could visually hit the target they wanted, which was to make the video game LOOK like a TV episode. From camera, to content.

It's actually pretty amazing to work Matt and Trey, as well as the people who work on the actual TV show at SP Studios. You have know idea how cool it is to write some dialogue for the kids, and then get audio from SP Studios for those lines. Their team at SP Studios actually provide US with concept art too. They are just a great gang to work with, very funny too obviously.

SP can be very topical, which indicates how fast they work and often they can change gears for TV. They really are professionals, and they understand that TV and video games are two different mediums with two different development processes. They understand that they can change the topic of this week's TV show on a dime for some breaking news event, but that same mode of operation doesn't work in video games. Video games that focus on topical humor don't tend be topical when they are released due to how long it takes for video games to be developed.

The secret project that Josh is the project director for was as a direct result of both Vegas and DS 3.

I know some of you guys keep thinking that DS 3 was a failure, either because you didn't like it, or because you think over 820k units is a failure. When we show publishers DS 3, including the review scores which were mid to low 7, we ALSO show them the price tag for DS 3, which is VERY LOW. We also show them how SOLID and bug free Onyx is, how flexible it is, AND we show them our amazing toolset. At this point publisher's jaws hit the floor (or the table if seated). When we tell them DS 3 went through console certification with ALMOST perfect scores, believe me, they are impressed.

However, there are factions that the player must appease/align with, and it's Obsidian. Can you say South Park meets Alpha Protocol in terms of mutable story?

Probably stuff like the Emo kids, Kindergartners, parents, random celebrities/figures and whatever others that they somehow write into the game. It's been a damn long time since I've seen South Park so I'm not caught up on some of the newer stuff.
