X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

Though yes, Marvel Afterlife should definitely have some good natured fourth wall-leaning on the nature of death in comics.

[up][up]...That is actually fricking brilliant. And even if later writers ignore it, there's probably nothing they can do to really outright erase or contradict it later. It explains so much, while also taking care of a number of Continuity Snarls naturally caused by a sliding timescale. (Including most stories dealing in some way with the Soviet Union.)

To be fair, though, X-Men: Worst X-Man Ever doesn't actually take place on Earth-616 (or Prime Universe or whatever). It takes place on an Earth with, like, the most recognizable X-Men. So Cyclops is still the leader of the X-Men, Professor X is still alive, and so on. And Miranda (and Bailey, the main character) don't actually have 616-counterparts (yet).

Miranda was kinda awful though. She was just waiting for Bailey to kill himself and take out Riches before she changed anything, like girl his life had been unending misery ever since he figured out he was a mutant. He got stuck at the worst x-men ever table, with Cyclops, X-Man, Maggot, Skin, and Magneto's clone for goodness sake.

According to Magneto's self demonstrating article, I've been pronouncing his name wrong for as long as I've known X-men.

Do the goofs at Marvel even know the term magneto existed before X-men and that might be the reason everyone pronounces it a certain way?

Can I say that I'm sick of all the Ron the Death Eater treatment Cyclops gets in the X-Titles? Like, I know this is all a slow build to whatever X-Men/Inhuman storyline that got down the pipeline but the problem with dragging out this vague terrible thing that makes Cyclops the anti-christ is that the payoff will not live up to all the buildup.

Either what Cyclops did won't be as bad as they made it out to be or he did something so out of character that it won't make sense.

You know, a couple years back, EIC Axel Alonso said Scott was his favorite Marvel character of all.

I'm still puzzling over whether he was lying or if he's one of those people who likes seeing their faves put through the wringer.

You know, I am really sick of the X-Men's current "Scott Summer's is the Devil and everything he says or does is bad" schitck.

Like, Scott could go to the school with chocolates and ask to form a truce and they'd act like he was the cause of diabetes.

[up][up][up] It may also be that he's not the one coming up with the things being done to Scott.

[up][up] Well, give it a few years, he'll be back as the leader of the X-Men again. I'd say probably by 2020.

Because permanent change is bad, as far as the Big Two are concerned.

Adult Scott may not be favoured all that much in the Alonzo era, but I think that's the whole point of 05 Scott's journey...that young one isn't saddled (yet) with all the things that soured opinions on adult Scott and he has an uphill battle to try and redeem his name to the world at large.

[up] Yeah, overall, it's not impressing me. I'm not a fan of the Legacy Virus 2.0 storyline. In the most recent issue, Storm was just written poorly. She's no stranger to telepathy. She's been inside mindscapes before. She probably knows more about this sort of thing than Teen Jean does. And yet, she's written as though she's never done something like before and is out of her depth and needs Jean to hold her hand.

Plus, the constant references to "What Cyclops Did" are obnoxious. Either tell us what he did, or shut the fuck about it until you're ready to tell us. Seriously, do one or the other. Don't keep teasing and dragging out the mystery. It's obnoxious. They want us to hate Scott but won't tell us why we should. To hell with that.

[up] Jeff Lemire isnt that great on team books, but hes solo titles like Bloodshoot are pretty good.Btw,I found his Old Man Logan to also be pretty good. Reviving Cyclops as an Inhuman hybrid was a nice twist,I have to admit. Also,Im getting really sick of Inhumans everywhere.

[up][up] I actually wish that they kept the Cyclops Inhuman clone alive and tried to rehabilitate it, because that would have been an interesting storyline.

So far, the most interesting storyline in EXM has been Colossus and Magik.
