X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

The reason I didn't use Jamie McKelvie is because he's very busy doing Phonogram right now and after that's done, he back to doing The Wicked + The Divine (which just had a really cool re-mix issue using only artwork from past issues...and Sex Criminals).

But yes, perhaps if Kris Anka and Jamie McKelvie both did half of the book, that would be good. That way, they have more time to spend on other projects.

Yes, yes, I like this idea already. Let's pitch it to Marvel!

I don't care for his designs. Or his art to be honest.

[up] You mean Anka, or Mc Kelvie? Mc Kelvie is a master at design, and I really love his art.

Anka . . . I've seen some designs he's done for fun that were pretty good, others that didn't do much for me. In general, he seems very much a proponent of the Practical School of Superhero Fashion. Actually, when he's just doing normal clothes, he can be pretty cool. But yeah, I'm not a fan of a lot of his designs. His Dazzler design was bad, and his changes to the Captain Marvel uniform are pretty much universally bad. (The one exception: The pouches. And that's only because he actually had a specific function in mind for each pouch.) Mc Kelvie's Captain Marvel design was perfection. The dominant blue is striking, while the red and yellow accents make it visually interesting. The long gloves and boots provide exactly the perfect amount of balance to the blue.

When the biggest complaint about the costume is that other people kept changing the hair, then that's a great design. Mc Kelvie's design can't be faulted for that problem. So, yeah, that uniform was absolutely perfect.

Anka shortened the gloves and boots, and also made the boots make not a lick of sense. Minor tweaks, but ones that make it look inferior.

Edit: As for Anka's art, I generally like it. He does have a weird tendency towards blotchy non-faces. But for the most part, I find it a pleasant style.

How can you not like Mc Kelvie's designs? The man has unquestionably the best designs in comics. The Captain Marvel uniform is genius. His redesign of Wiccan's costume was fantastic. He designed Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel costume. His characters always have great casual clothes. Wic Div is filled with awesome fashion. No one does fashion as well as Mc Kelvie.

Thought Kevin Wada's pretty damned great, too. But he's more high-fashion. He'd actually be the right choice to do a Wasp series, now that I think of it. Mc Kelvie is generally more functional fashion - clothes people actually wear. Even Wic Div is clothes pop stars wear. But Wada is high fashion - clothes that fashion models wear.

As far as Mc Kelvie's actual art goes, obviously that's subjective. I love it, you don't. Fair enough. But Mc Kelvie rocks at fashion designs.

The only one I really like is Kamala's. I can't stand the fashion in wic/div outside of Daft Woden and thats more me liking daft punk than the actual costume. also his faces all look the same.

Mc Kelvie does have Same Face going on with his art, along with Dull Suprise. It's otherwise stylish and fun.

Anka has come a long way. The only real misses I think he's had was the Dazzler redesign and aspects of the Spider-Woman costume (needed more red).

I'm also not a huge fan of Mc Kelvie's Plasticine, Tumblrbait art style.

I do concede that his design for Ms. Marvel is great, and the design for Captain Marvel is good sans that idiotic helmet.

Ok I read Old Man Logan and what the fuck was that ending. It was like reading Billy Madison's speech at the end of the movie about the lost puppy in comic book form. why is this logan so special, what does from the future and the past mean why does bendis not know that there are no alternate dimensions there is only battleworld. just why was this made. cause it looks good? in that case take out all bendis dialouge and leave it like that, the comic is instantly 1000% better.

Why does bendis not know that there are no alternate dimensions there is only battleworld

The whole point of most of the tie-ins is showing that the people on Battleworld are slowly regaining their memories and realizing that Doom lied to them.

Eh its more of how Bendis implemented the change that pisses me off really. Especially the role Jean fucking Grey had in it.

I don't care much either because it's not like Bobby has anything else going for him as a character. I'm just puzzled at the need to specify him as gay, like being bisexual would be a bigger problem.

There's also some Fridge Horror in this whole thing: Eventually the teenage O5 will have to go back to their time, and the moment they do Xavier is going to notice what's happened.

He's going to have to wipe their minds to maintain the timeline during which it's going to be nigh on impossible to avoid details of his death and it means that he's also going to have to force Iceman back on a path where he'll pretend he's straight.

The faux outrage is just funny to be because this is the first time I remember Iceman being a relevant topic of discussion for years.

So I haven't read it yet but looking around the 'net the response to Extraordinary #1 has been quite positive. Though there is one Base Breaker detail: seems Colossus's father has been retconned into being abusive.

The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."

[up]What, are they pulling a Fant4stic Four now? Is it going to turn out that his father used to yell, "BOSHMOI!" every time he beat the sh*t out of Colossus? tongue

I don't even mind that. The only thing that bothers me is they seem to be retconning when Colossus first manifested his powers. To me, using his powers for the first time to save his sister from a tractor was awesome.

New universe so I guess they can retcon with abandon.

Also did anybody throw a snicker when Storm called Jean the heart of the X-Men when she...... really hasnt done anything the heart would normally do right?
