^ Except there have been cases of folks doing just that in reality.

Does Tin Man count?
I hate it when characters are described as emotionless. If someone has no emotions, then they have no motivation for doing anything, so they should just go limp and lay on the ground until they die.
True, but fiction does not have to be like reality, and just because the whole Freudian Excuse shtick has some real-world basis does not make it any less of an irritating cliche.
"IMO, if you're going to rail against any "trauma trope, " it should be Freudian Excuse and the entire "being abused magically turns you Ax Crazy" group of cliches."
Says an Urasawa fan.
So long as Freudian Excuse is treated like a possibly rather than a guaranteed outcome, I don't see the problem.
And better than thy stroke; why swellest thou then?Raven Wilder: brb lying on the ground dying

It's explicitly mentioned - toward the end - in Monster that Johan's abuse wasn't actually the reason he turned out a Complete Monster, so that's a subversion. And a pretty good one, at that. (Same thing with Friend.)
Also, @Major Tom: I know that was meant as an Ironic Echo of my last post, but which one seems like a more realistic consequence of trauma: Depression or slaughtering innocent people just because they're there?

Project progress: The Adroan (102k words), The Pigeon Witch, (40k). Done but in need of reworking: Yume Hime, (50k)Oh, no doubt, but Grimmer and Roberto both fulfill the trope while Johan, Anna, and Dieter all subvert it.
And better than thy stroke; why swellest thou then?^^ Mostly the former, but the latter can happen and has been documented to happen. (Albeit rarely)
Human response to trauma is more being pushed to an emotional extreme rather than acting the extreme. Meaning while you may in attitude conclude everyone has to die after suffering a traumatic event, you are not likely to even try to carry it out.
