Someone just threw up an image on Big Fancy Castle that doesn't show the trope at all. It's just some loading screen and a big does of Fan Myopia.

Seconding pull.

That said, I love the Disney castle - almost everybody recognizes it; what more can we ask for?

Wha... huh...?

I don't understand how the current page image even slightly fits the trope. The Disney castle looks good.

Milon's Castle of Secrets would be a more fitting name

Unfortunately for Cinderella's Castle, the trope is "This isn't just a large castle. This thing is absolutely ENORMOUS".

I've been to Cinderella's castle. It's really pretty small as far as castles go.

Then the name invites misuse. Should we take it up on TRS?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

The name doesn't invite misuse. There is none on the page. Big means big. The fact that people are suggesting small things for a trope with big in the name is just weird.

1. Misuse is also for wicks, not just the page. 2. 37 wicks and 6 inbounds is just plain bad.

[up] That one's good.

[up][up] Considering it started with 11, it's actually been growing at a good pace. It's not a very old page.

Drawing of Versailles?

Aerial photo of just the palace at Versailles, (not the whole grounds)?

Aerial photo of the whole thing?

photo, showing the castle and a tiny part of the formal gardens?

It's certainly a palace. I don't know that we need or want to limit this to the stereotypical towers-and-turrets European "castle".

Versailles is a palace, not a castle.

I like Deboss's suggestion.

So you are suggesting that this trope be strictly limited to stereotypical, turrets-and-towers fairytale style "castles"? Then there are a lot of bad examples to clear out.

[up] Yes, because that's what the word "castle" means. A big mansion with gardens around, a la James Bond Villain, is not a castle. A secret volcanic lair (The Incredibles) is not a castle. The palace of Versailles is not a castle either.

That's a bit of a rash decision. It necessitates creating Big Fancy Palaces and Big Fancy Lairs.

Here's what Webster has to say on the matter

1cas·tle noun \ˈka-səl Definition of CASTLE 1 a : a large fortified building or set of buildings b : a massive or imposing house 2 : a retreat safe against intrusion or invasion 3 : 3rook
Even if we limit it to definition 1a, that's still far broader than turret-and-tower style.

^^ This. If we strictly limit it to one style of architecture, we need other tropes for all the other styles.

And almost all the time they serve exactly the same function, plot-wise. There's no need to differentiate unless you're a particularly zealous architecture major.

Wait... Should big fancy castle be different from lair and palace?

I mean those are some pretty big differences.

Please.

Castle and Palace, I say no because fiction tends to use the two terms interchangeably even when they aren't.

Lair I can see being it's own thing if it's not actually a castle or a palace. A moon base or a volcano lair doesn't really fit this trope.

[up]I agree with this. Castle and Palace are technically different, but most works of fiction use them interchangeably to refer to any sort of "elaborate place where royalty lives" setup.

But yeah, stuff like evil lairs should be split off; this trope is more targeted towards medieval fairy tail type castles and palaces.
