The image on Frothy Mugs of Water is a card from a collectible card game. I'll take the caption's word for it that it's a real card, but that doesn't make it a good image: it's heavily cropped, and has lots of gibberish caption from the card's rules text.

My suggestion would be to take a picture for this scene from the Japanese version of Dragon Ball Z, and underneath place the same picture from the American dub, to show the contrast.

[up] That suggestion would work fine for me. Should we go ahead and pull the current pic or leave it til we find something better? I'm good with either.

Disagree strongly - the card's rule text ties in with the joke and the image is of good quality. The proposed replacement would be functional, but IMO the card is both functional and funnier.

[up]I second this. The fact that even a card game is making fun of the trope makes the image more interesting/funny.

[up][up] It's certainly funny that a card game makes fun of this trope; then again, that particular card game makes fun of everything, and this is really trivia. The trope is not "conventions made fun of in a card game". The trope is beer and similar drinks being replaced by water and soda in translations, so the image should show that. That means a before and an after shot, not a drink crossed out in crayon.

Vote to keep. The card is easily understandable.

Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope.

[up][up]Which is exactly the piont discussed in that card. There's no need to be redundant and go for a multipanel.

Yeah, there's no real reason to change the image. I vote to keep.

Team Four Star and Dragon Ball Abridged made fun of this with one episode, by randomly changing Roshi's drink into things like soda, candy bars, and Nappa's head.

—> Nappa: "Wait, what the hell!?"

It'd be hard to show it without a series of screenshots though.

I'm somewhat against the current image. I know it's parodying the style of a trading-card game, but remember that we've got a kill order against using Magic cards as page images. The card's illustration by itself doesn't convey the trope on its own, and the card's description doesn't talk about the censoring of drugs or alcohol.

[up]You gotta be kidding... The name of the bloody card is "Frothy Mugs of Water". Mugs. It could refer to nothing but alcohol...

[down]If I didn't know any better I'd say that you're trying to troll me... Whatever. Wanna do a multipanel? Do a multipanel if that's "better". Hey, replacing a working picture with what's basically the same picture but more generic sounds like a waste of time, but what do I know? :|

[up][up]The picture is still basically JAFAAC. The composition of the picture boils down to a picture of a guy holding a mug of beer and a really big caption (the rest of the card) saying "This is an example".

And the card's art doesn't really illustrate the trope anyway; the trope is "Alcohol or drugs being censored by trying to pass it off as something innocent. The picture on the card just shows a giant X over the beer.

In order to actually show the trope, we need to see that the beer has been edited into water.

[up] I tend to agree. Maybe a pic of the beer labeled "Before 4Kids" and one of the frothy aqua labeled "After 4Kids"...

DBZ wasn't a 4Kidz licence, it was always Funimation's. It was the mid-2000s before Funimation caught on to the market for unedited anime and even later before they became the big player they are now; when they first picked up DBZ, it was only intended for TV syndication and the Animation Age Ghetto was in full effect for pretty much any US TV-aired anime not on Starz or Sci-Fi.

[up] Oh, that's from DBZ? I was thinking it was from One Piece, my bad.

EDIT: Yep, if I'd paid closer attention to the art, I'd've seen that from the get-go.

Well I am happy with the current but I guess we can do an Abridged bit or a panel or two of the different dubs of that scene.

Saban/funi dub did water, DBZ Kai did Milk.

For crying out loud, it's the #%!@& Trope Namer.

That card. Right there. It's where the trope name comes from.

That doesn't matter. If it doesn't demonstrate the trope it's not a good image.

Be not afraid...

It demonstrates the trope in three ways (two of them good).

  1. It shows a mug of beer being censored (with an X over it).
  2. It has a quote which lays out the trope in just one sentence.
  3. It has a series of pretty easily understandable game jargon that describes a censorship-like effect.*

The third way is the weakest, but the top two easily say that the image explains the trope.

But, if I understand it right, the trope isn't "Censors put red crosses over alcoholic beverages", it's "Censors claim a drink is water or milk or another drink, despite it clearly being alcohol". So the picture doesn't actually demonstrate the trope.

Be not afraid...
