Having read the petition and original filing this would only apply to abortion and plan b type options.

I still don't like the forcing of their ideology down others throats though.

I don't see why it would. I mean, they can't force you two to have sex. At the point that they can, then we've gone way past the point where we should be concerned.

Seriously, though, I don't see how this can be constitutionally enforced. Isn't the Roe Vs. Wade law federal or something?

Yes, but this is not the first time a state has tried to impose its own agenda over the federal government's.

Folks please pay attention to this part carefully.

the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof.”

Condoms, diaphrams, and other means that stop or prevent fertilization are not covered by this. The target is abortion and plan b items. It may pick up on IUD devices and other things that function in a similar manner.

The whole deal stinks of religious right political meddling though.

the functional equivalent thereof.

It is covering future technology not yet invented or in development. Items like artificial uteruses which is an emergent tech. I would imagine this also covers artificial insemination in some way or other. I saw nothing in the change about needed medications for PCOS or other items.

The one good item from this is defining clones as people.

Aside from the whole issues of what this is going to mean for miscarriages (which, if you go by the stats, occur in the majority of fertilised eggs - nature kills far more "people" than abortion does), it's also going to cause issues with IVF and so on.

If every fertilised eggs is a person, what happens to all the leftovers after the IVF pregnancy succeeds?

I hope Mississippi has enough prisons then.

Having read the petition and original filing this would only apply to abortion and plan b type options.

Even by the standard they're trying to set, this is going too far. Plan B is primarily an ovulation blocker, with a secondary effect of thickening cervical mucus in order to keep sperm out of the uterus. It acts before fertilization has occurred. The sort of ignorance being demonstrated by the MS legislature is exactly why lawmakers should leave birth control—including abortion—alone.

@Ratix: Possibly a typo, chances are it will be removed from the bill.
