The recent thread on what was then Troper Force reminded me of this page, which has the same dubious distinction.

Machine O Matic might work better?

No, in this case the first word doesn't correspond to "machine". It corresponds to a verb indicating what the machine does, or a noun indicating what the machine does it to.

Something-O-Matic? X-O-Matic?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Sadly, Function-O-Matic comes off as a little unwieldy...

There is now a single proposition rename crowner for this trope here.

Trope-O-Matic found in: 38 articles, excluding discussions.

This title has brought 230 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '09.

However, if other people think we should just go straight to alternative titles because of the use of trope as a placeholder, I would be open to doing that.

I'll propose Whatever O Matic for the new name.

Trope-O-Matic is now a redirect for Thing-O-Matic. There are notes about the change on the Renamed Tropes page and in the renamed tropes thread and I sent a report to move the archived discussion found here. The wicks should be fixed, but I was unsure what to do with some of the Phineas And Ferb examples which focused on inventions which used the suffix "-inator" rather than "o-matic." Since the description for Thing-O-Matic is pretty specific, I mostly moved those examples to Theme Naming, but I am wondering if it would be better to just delete them instead as Theme Naming seems to be used more for character names than invention names.

In any event, it would definitely appreciate feedback on that or any part of the rename.

I wouldn't mind a redirect added for "Thinginator" that is a serious thing.

Or make it a sister trope.

"Thinginator" is close enough it could easily be lumped and made a redirect.

I say lump. The YKTTW was called Hometown-inator 3000, and it's clearly meant to be the same trope.

Yup, lumping makes a lot of sense in this case.

What Medinoc mentioned about the YKTTW convinced that lumping the two naming conventions was a good idea. Thinginator is now a redirect for Thing-O-Matic and I reverted my edits to the Phineas And Ferb pages.
