Masturbation is Abortion says Sen. Enrile

If it makes you feel any better, politics are stupid everywhere.

SEN. JUAN PONCE ENRILE: “Well, if the man wants to satisfy himself by manipulating himself alone, if it is only for pleasure, then it interferes with the production of life. That is my belief. That is a matter of faith to me.”

How does that interfere with the production of life? There's no other person anyways.

Y'know, this is a fine opportunity to teach us non Filipino tropers some insults and profanities in Tagalog. I don't know how to say WTF in response to this story and it makes me feel like such a rube.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

My mother didn't have the foresight to teach me any curse words, I'm afraid to say. Seriously, this is the kind of shit I'd say to poke fun at the "potential for life" argument. I wasn't aware there were people who actually thought like that.

Hm. Isn't that belief pretty much confined to Catholicism in the modern day world?

(Clicks link.)

...yep, we get to blame this one on the Catholics. :D And I say that with relief, because most of the time, I'm used to it being my guys (Protestants) screwing things up.

I don't see this one as being a battle they can win, anyway. It's pretty much a dead issue - people may still argue over whether you SHOULD masturbate or not, but implementing laws about it? That's not gonna get much popular support.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

It shall be decreed that masturbation should only be performed via the "stranger" method.

Heh, his middle name is "Ponce".

Anyway, I would have thought that the Philippines has bigger problems than hand-wringing over dead sperm. I also find it hard to believe that the senator in question has never had a wank.

He must be a moron. That's not garden variety stupid... That's actually retarded.

He's unaware that sperm dies and is reabsorbed for the body all the time, and that women masturbating has no effect on the egg whatsoever? Didn't he pass basic human biology in high school?

[up]Hence why I am ashamed. The topic I found this in declared everybody on that board murderers.

@Radical Taoist: The most common one and widely used is Puta.

* puta = fuck
  • ina = mother
  • putangina = puta ng ina = mother fucker

There are other ones like putik = mud; bwesit = damn; tangina = a shortened version of putangina. Note we sometimes exchange "i" with "e" or "u" with "o" to twist and extend the words a little bit more.

WTF would translate into "Anong Puta—" with ano = what. But in this case, it won't be an actual profanity unlike WTF and more like an actual question.

You forgot Puneta, which means, IIRC, "wanker" - apropos for the topic.

Anyway, I think that's a bit of a mischaracterization at first glance - sure, we Catholics believe it's a sin, but it's not the same thing as an abortion - like cheating on your spouse is different from shooting them.

Of course, Enrile's got way more things to answer for... like several serious attempts to overthrow the government (and by overthrow, I'm not talking votes of confidence - I'm talking about tanks in the streets).

Of course, the bill this "debate" is part of will IMO likely fail - it's called either "I'm Catholic/Evangelical/Muslim and I don't think the government should be spending that much money on an immoral program" or "I don't care either way, but I'd like to be reelected, thank you very much".

forgiven if i'm wrong but i'm fairly surly Enrile viewer's blatantly contradicted the traditional catholic theological view of conception as the start of human life.

The man is entitled to his views but these of statements could easily be interrupted as blasphemy by the Philippine church.

[up]Yeah. Then again, we are talking about someone who's the definition of knee-jerk actor. I mean, his solution for almost every problem seems to involve a group of officers storming Malacanan. Or at least it seemed so for a while. He should be in jail, not the Senate.

Um, no. As the link says, the Catholic Church strongly disapproves of masturbation — a belief which, if I am not mistaken, is shared by most other Christian groups, as well as by many non-Christian religions.

But the reasons for that are most definitely not "masturbation is abortion", that's nonsense. Although, it must be said, I did not find in the article any quote in which Sen. Enrile said that: rather, he said

Well, if the man wants to satisfy himself by manipulating himself alone, if it is only for pleasure, then it interferes with the production of life. That is my belief. That is a matter of faith to me.
which is indeed the official Catholic position.

Is masturbation a venial or mortal sin in the eyes of the Church?

Is masturbation a venial or mortal sin in the eyes of the Church?
First, a note. What I am stating here is the official position — opinions among Catholics vary on this issue, as in on a number of other matters.

This said, for an act to be a mortal sin it must satisfy three requirements:

  1. Grave matter;
  2. Full knowledge, both of the sin and of the gravity of the offense;
  3. Deliberate an complete consent.

Now, obviously, whether the second and third conditions are satisfied will change a lot according to circumstances. Just to make an extreme example, a teenager who just about knows what masturbation is, wakes up horny and ends up masturbating does not fulfill either.

As for the first, "grave matter" is defined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church as follows:

1858 Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: "Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother." The gravity of sins is more or less great: murder is graver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: violence against parents is in itself graver than violence against a stranger.

And, in the section of the Ten Commandments, in the comments to "you shall not commit adultery" it says:

2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety, or other psychological or social factors that lessen or even extenuate moral culpability.

If I read this correctly, this says that yes, it is a grave matter. But whether it is a mortal sin too depends on a lot of circumstances, and in the vast majority of the cases it almost certainly isn't.

I have always thought we should make the Philipenes a honorary member of Latin America.

After all they where a Spaniard colony, thus a country with a huge unfufilled potential, that had a retarded ultra-conservative right, huge disparities of wealth, truck loads of corruption, and a mindlessly silly political system.

Reminds me of home.

[up] There are some Latin Soap Operas (and remember, everything made for television in certain Parts of latin america are labeled as Soap operas, even game shows in Argentina, because we dont call them Sopa operas but "visualised novels" tele novelas)that are actually quite good.

At least the old ones. Amongs my favourites "Ugly Betty" which is Colombian "Rich People Also Cry " which is Mexican and last but not least "Cafe" which is Brazilian.
