Admit it, what grade were you when you saw your first gundam?

Late 8th grade going into freshman in high school. (I first saw Gundam of any kind over 10 years ago.)

Why oh why did they make that style so juvenile;have no problems with kid heros. It's just that art style combined with GUNDAM. Makes me want to go to my happy place.

It was a decent first episode, just enough action to get your attention; but then the show ends before it gets good so that you have to come back. This show won't start to get really interesting until around episode seven maybe ten.

The actual back story of the AG Evers holds allot more interest to me than what's currently going on.

With appearance of Jamil Noa as The Captian and Amuro Colasour as The Ace. I wonder just how much of the older series has made into this show; hopefully it will have Newtypes or something equivalent.

Oh, god, I knew this was coming.

Oh well, I never cared about art style in this particular franchise so long as as the story is good.

[up][up]Heh, I noticed that too. Looks like Dearka crossed with Howard Mason, actually.

Also: people whining about people whining about the character designs make me laugh. They're a radical departure from the Gundam norm. Not everyone is going to like it. Facepalming because someone has a different opinion than you is rather silly.

But the most important thing to remember: "What are you going to do about it?"

Bandai didn't make this anime for you. They made it for Japan. Japan has always been the first customer for Bandai. Every other country is secondary.

Other than that, one can see this as another Wind Waker.

I also noticed that they also recruited alumni from previous Gundam series. Especially Flit Asuno's mom.

Come on now that AGE is out somebody had to hate on the art style one last time;might as well be me!cool

I personally do intend to give AGE The Winder Waker chance;to show some substance behind that kiddy art style. And from what I've scene so far i still interested. Art style doesn't equal substance tho ZZ-Gundam is proof of that. I Couldn't finish the series because of the lack of seriousness and dislike for the main character.

In the middle of a war, a young adult who harbors sympathy for the enemy. Attempts to board a spacecraft carrier and steal what amounts to several billion dollars worth military hardware;and nobody arrests or shoots him?!just bugs me

[up]See, I'm the exact opposite, though, I hate it when Gundam tries too hard to be gritty and serious, because I allready know in advance that the robots/pilots have superpowers so it's hard for me to treat it like the military show it presents itself as. AGE, on the other hand, with all the talk of the Gundam being a "legendary warrior" I know that the show isn't lying to me and it's being honest about being Super Robot show right from the gate.

[up][up] Because he made the actual Gundam.

And trying to hate the Artstyle just because its radically different isn't helping. Its labled under Fan Dumb for a reason.

[up] Thing is, Gundam has always been Gritty and serious, but they all were to some different degrees.

[up]Jsut because they had a (very very loose and contrived) "political landscape" and a lot of characters got killed off? the actions scenes in Gundam were ALLWAYS flashy and soft as hell with the uses of all the various Super Mode and doomsday weapon usage. What's wrong about having the tone of the story match the rediculous action scenes so you don't have to con the viewers to trick them into thinking they're watching something they're not?

Because The story doesn't HAVE to be light or soft to go with the action.

Yes, The Action scenes are bright and flashy, but the stories themselves were usually always taken seriously. G Gundam is a rare exception and even then, it still has a dark background on the whole.

Guys, if you're not going to talk about Gundam AGE specifically, then take it to the main Gundam thread. Let's try to keep this one on topic, okay?

[up][up]Except, that's just the thing, you could tell in advance who was going to live or die just by what machine they were piloting, which is a silly way to do things if you really plan on your story being taken as a military drama.

with AGE, though, it doesn't seem to have those kinds of dilusious and just goes "Yeah, we know it's not serious so we're going to just have fun with it." rather than do what SOME Gundam shows do in their first episode and dump a bunch of background information on you and then follow it up with an over-the-top action scene so the tension of the "war" dissolves immediately because you only feel the people piloting sub-par machines are in danger.

[up][up][up]Guys, if you keep going with this argument, it'll never end like the whole "Zeon started a war for the sake of their independence" vs "Zeon did a Colony Drop for practically no reason" argument, and none of us really want that.

Personally, I'm also supporting the whole "UE are Human Aliens or humans disguised as aliens" theory, if only because it makes a lot of sense and because it supports my theory concerning Turn A Gundam, 00 and really, the entire Gundam Meta-verse: Turn A Gundam mentioned that humans eventually left for space due to various reasons, among them, an increasing lack of safety for people living in colonies. The 00 movie showed us that humanity did eventually head into outer space. Furthermore, what drove the world to apocalypse was that humans started a war that lasted several hundreds of years. Now, the general interpretation is that this is all due to the various Gundam continuities, but even put together, those wars don't last more than a century or so (most of which is UC). Therefore, Sunrise is showing us the Black History through recent Gundam series, like 00 and AGE. Since it has been said that AGE will revolve around a Hundred Year War, I daresay AGE will get really dark as it progresses.

Whether the artstyle fits the tone of the story, whether Gundam itself is gritty and serious, etc etc.

Well, it's frankly hilarious that we're already complaining after watching about 24 minutes of it.

I'm no fan of the art style, but it was probably made for contrast. And Gundam(except G and ZZ) is pretty serious, so no debate there.

My only problem with the artstyle is that it makes the characters look even more archetypal and flat... and as a result, I have no clue why I should watch any more of the series.

[up][up]What I mean is most of the other Gundam shows are only "serious" in the sense there's melodrama. as soon as robots start fighting that tension all disapates because it's only a matter of time until a Super Mode or other such superweapon is used by the main character. It's why Gundam just works better as a lighthearted show. AGE really does nail this by explaining right away that the Gundam is NOT treated like a millitary vehicle and that, it, outright is a "Legendary Warrior". which pretty much confirms, at least in the AGE setting, that the Gundam is a Super Robot, not a Real Robot, and I think it just fits better.

I'm willing to give a super robot story a chance as the story is not typical.
