10bit Encoding: New standard (Non-official help thread)

This is this thing called piracy. No joke. You need a custom cart for it like Acekard. The one on this The Other Wiki page is the one I'm using.

edit: All you need to do is load the player into the microSD, load the card onto the cart, load the cart on your DS, turn on the device and play the moonshell's .nds file. It will say it run into an error, but it's actually loading the software.

It's not supposed to. Try altering the setiings. I'm not actually having trouble with mine.

MEH! Actually installing CCCP made all the converters that failed to convert 10bit before work! Fancy that....

You need a flashcart as well. Acekart is one of the better models. Also... be sure to buy a microSD (not the fat one) card.

Technically speaking, simply owning flashcarts doesn't make you a pirate. You could use them to play homebrew games or use applications. It is also legal to play commercial games on it if you bought the physical copies.

Yeah, but didn't Ninty had those carts banned due to the mass flow of pirated copies of games on the internet.

Banned? Nintendo? Er... I'm not seeing how they can actually 'ban' someone from using hardware - at most, they can only take legal action against sites that offer game downloads.

But we're going off-topic here, so I will ask something else. I want to convert my .mkv videos to .mp4 so I can put them on my iPhone. I've tried various converters but the softsubs are always lost in the conversion process.

Xvid4psp with K-lite codec installed will convert to iPhone format. CCCP does not do softsubs with it or at least I can't figure it out. K-Lite does it automatically just load it up and convert.

Incidentally also has formats for DS and PSP. I got the idea of playing anime on my DS from Raso....

Where do you run into videos requiring this new encoding?

I agree but then we have no say on the matter. The best I could think of was do my research and help others. Messy way of creating a new standard is forcing it to the public.

The only real reason that they are using 10 bit is because of: faster encoding, less banding, and smaller file sizes. That is the reason that they give for using the new format.

And that's a good thing. I mean everyone wanted Hi-Res for shorter time downloading.

Another post from the Linux side:

10bit works in the git (development) version of M Player 2 just fine, which is what I am using at the moment on my main Arch Linux box. I am also using the git version of x264. I haven't really tried with the latest stable versions of those applications yet (10bit didn't work when I downloaded NB's Penguindrum 8 v2 on the Friday it was released), but I haven't had any major bugs or crashes with the git versions yet, so I don't see any reason to change to the stable versions, at least for now.

I can't build vlc-git for some reason, so I haven't tried playing 10-bit on that yet, although I do want to try at some point.

Just one thing: 10-bit encodes do not play if you use VDPAU as your video output. If you use VDPAU and you want to play 10-bit encodes, you have to change the video output to something like gl, xv or X11. I believe this will apply if you use vanilla Mplayer too.

CCCP is crashing on me for some reason... It just suddenly stops working all of a sudden.

Which player? Try K-Lite instead? Is it a 1080p video? If it's the last one try a 720 version and see if it plays.

I'm using MCP-HC and playing 720p files in 10bit. I remember using this player a long time ago and having the same problem.

Whatever. I stream and use VLC, so I obviously don't give a shit about video quality. If I ever run into 10bit, I'll probably just download CCCP - which I might have done already, actually.

Now, now. We don't know that and so we must pass over that topic in silence... To avoid being barbecued and troubling our dear mods.

I would also point out that Commie's 10bit encoding seems different from other 10bit: I downloaded some anime in 10bit from the former team of Subdesu-H and was able to convert it. When comes Commie subs for Fate/Zero, the same converter reported an error. I'm still looking into it.

Edit: Commie's sub has a special character in it's filename. Fixed. It's now working.

What's wrong with VLC? It plays videos just like any other player.

It gets pixel-ly sometimes. And apparently it can't play 10bit properly. And /a/ hates it, for some reason.

VLC screws up subtitles (especially non-standard placements), massive amounts of pixeling especially when skipping around, skipping around sometimes doesn't work, sound issues etc. The only thing good about it is Highrez screenshots when it actually goes to the point you want.
