"Mankind's last hope is a myth"

St. George is a superhero comic book series published by the Epic Comics imprint of Marvel Comics.

It's part of the Shadowline shared universe, set in a world where a second, hidden race - the Shadow Dwellers - evolved alongside humanity. Individually, Shadow Dwellers are more powerful than humans, but humans vastly outnumber them and so they've tended to stay hidden. Until now.

Father Michael Devlin is a Catholic priest in Brooklyn, haunted by his past and feeling powerless to help his congregation. He's not a Shadow Dweller, just a normal human who knows nothing about that secret world.

Then Barnabbas and the Order of St. George find him, and offer him a new role. The armor and staff of a holy warrior, powered by his faith. A chance to fight for the values he believes in. A chance to do good.

If only it was that simple. If only Michael knew what happened to his predecessors. But at some point he's going to find out.

After the series was cancelled, St. George's story continued in Critical Mass, an Anthology Comic combining the previous three Shadowline titles.

St. George includes the following tropes:

  • Jedi Mind Trick: Barnabbas's illusion powers are very good for making people see the documents they expect to see, such as passports or other ID.
  • Legacy of the Chosen: Michael is one of many knights to serve the Order over the centuries.
  • Master of Illusion: Barnabbas has illusion powers, although they're mostly used for minor tricks.
  • The Order: The titular Order of St. George fills this role, with Michael as their latest knight.
  • The Paladin: Officially, Michael's the Knight, not a paladin. But his role and his faith-fuelled powers mean that he's very much paladin material.
