There's a lot of salt in the Delaware Valley over the Eagles' receiver corps dropping 7 passes apparently, if a guy helping to catch little kids being thrown out of windows to escape a fire needing to make a jab at them is any indication.

Huh. I didn't realize that you could utilize a drop kick as a kickoff. I thought it had to be a place kick, which would by definition limit the height of the kick which means that your only option is distance and a touchback.

But if you can dropkick well... Rugby League uses dropkicks all the time, they can get decent height and drop them reliably 40-60 metres down field. And since the NFL doesn't seem to have the NCAA rule that a fair catch on a kickoff inside the 25 is a touchback... Wouldn't that let teams force their opponents to start inside the 25 by demanding a fair catch through good coverage?

I mean I've just seen the Justin Tucker drop kick kickoff and it's atrocious. But a week of intense coaching from a rugby League kicking coach could easily refine that technique into a potent weapon.

This is a rough start for Steelers.

Next week is against Bengals, and they're in the same situation.

Man, it's kind of wild to think that in the AFC North, Browns are just killing it.

The 9ers almost had 3 separate 100 yard rushers against the Bengals. The Steelers will be fine.

Really bad hit on Maddox for Eagles

This looks pretty bad, they’re being real careful

Green Bay could have won if they weren't so allergic to running plays. Imagine going for 4th and goal because you absolutely, positively have to throw the ball.

Only listened to the game but the Green Bay commentators did seem to suggest that the Eagles D-line were winning the battle in the trenches. Indeed, one of those plays on the one yard line was supposed to be a QB keeper but the D-line blew it up forcing Rodgers to scramble and eventually throw it away.

Also doesn't help your running game when one of your two RBs ends up in hospital after the first play from scrimmage. Again, haven't seen it but from the GB side many questioning why the dude didn't get ejected after a late hit to the head.

[up]Two head to heads near the start of the game-for the most part, they let them play, and only called the egregious stuff like DPI for the corner wrapping an arm around the hip of the receiver. And two players carted off in one game-yeesh.

Yikes, 16 - 10 Patriots win, but damn Buffalo had me nervous. Brady was seeing ghosts half the time, too. On the other hand, our defense was still divine. Good on the Bills for finally scoring on them, but damn, if they weren't desperately chiseling against a stone wall.

Anyway, Pats are 4 - 0. Washington, you're next.

[up]I swear Meyers must have been wearing a Bills jersey, because Brady refused to throw in his direction, then trying to force it to everyone else. And the Pats better figure out something fast for the O-line, or Brady is going to retire on the field, feet first in a pine box.

The O-line is about as healthy as it's going to get, unless they can get Isaiah Wynn back on the field, because David Andrews is out for the season. The Bills, for all their defense's stoutness on the field, didn't actually touch Brady that much, but you could tell he was getting spooked.

The guards and tackles need to study this game in the film room closely and stay humble. They and Scar have work to do, even if they're playing trash teams for the next month or so. Brady may be the GOAT with an elite WR corps, but that don't mean a thing if the OL is a revolving door.

On the bright side, Ben Watson is off his suspension starting next week, so we'll have some veteran depth on tight end.

Also, 184 games into his career, Matthew Slater, one of the best special teamers and probably the last great gunner in the league, scored his very first touchdown.

Also also, today is the 5 year anniversary of the blowout defeat 41-14 by KC during the 2014 season, the one after which Belichick proclaimed "We're on to Cincinnati" and the Pats ended with a championship. At the time, sports journalists and fans thought Brady was done in New England and the dynasty was over.

Oof, Stephen Gostkowski on injured reserve. That possibly explains his missed PAT kicks. This is really unfortunate. I hope the Pats are working out some decent replacements.

The one silver lining is that the most reactionary elements of the Pats fandom — the ones screaming for him to be cut every time he misses an extra point and silent for the ten others he nails — will get a taste of true kicking mediocrity and finally understand why BB keeps him.

[up]Right away, if you ask me. tongue EDIT: Actually, I looked at that field goal she did — five step run up is absolutely no good in the NFL. Basically asking to get blocked or just straight up get murdered by a charging Aaron Donald.

I think it'll be Kai Forbath. He's in Foxborough today being worked out by BB in the middle of a rainstorm.

[up]Lloyd was tongue in cheek; I do not think there is any chance she kicks in an NFL game, even if she quit Soccer. Too much to learn and unlearn, but she definitely has the leg; and the fact that she was contacted by two teams with real interest broke down one of the final barriers to a female player in the NFL.

I definitely think we will see one as a placekicker within 3-4 years, though-there have been fewer NFL caliber kickers over the last few drafts, and there are about 5-6 mainstays that are likely out of the league by the end of next season. When that happens, it will be the wild west for kickers, and I think at least 1 woman makes a final 53 roster. Either by a GM very secure in their job, or one trying to save their job. I give it 3-1 odds the first one is a retired soccer player.

Alrighty then, 33-7 Patriots beat Redskins. 1st Quarter felt like a trap game — Brady unproductive, Nugent missing a PAT, Sims scoring a 65-yd rushing TD against our normally invincible secondary. Then the Pats torched them. Also, Mc Coy spent what seemed like half of Q2 risking a safety because of all them flags. Q3, ushing game opened up with both White and Michel, Brady got good receptions from Gordon, Edelman, Bolden. Patriots' O-line stepped up and our linebackers were the standouts defensively. Hightower, Van Noy, and Collins are the Second Coming of Bruschi, Vrabel, and Mc Ginest. Dont'a's representing that #54 with exemplary performance. Also, Pats score all 33 pts unanswered.

As a final note, I like Mike Nugent. He fucked up early, but he improved later and didn't make another miss. He did do a doink off the upright in his last PAT, but it bounced in. Maybe he has a lucky touch.

Pats are 5-0, 1st AFC East, remain tied with the Chiefs for No. 1 seed, remain one of three undefeateds alongside KC and San Francisco.

Whoa, Colts def. Chiefs 19-13. Defense hounded Mahomes the whole way and Vinatieri proves he's still got it.[awesome]

Now it's just NE and SF, and we don't have any regular season matchups. Still potential for a 16-0/16-0 clash in SBLIV, Brady v. Garropolo.

Jay Gruden fired after being embarrassed again by NE. Snyder being Snyder, he waited a few hours then had Jay come in for a 5 AM meeting to hear about how he was fired. There have been a lot of sports franchises that have become perennial dumpster fires for some combination of reasons, but this is clearly a endless decanter of shit rolling downhill from Snyder and his bestest buddy, Bruce Allen.

Presumably, the only takeaway for those two will be the ticket sales, about a home game that was at least 80% Patriot fans chanting 'Brady' and bringing the house down when Mccoy was on the field. Sports fandom is a proverbial blip on the radar of important things in life, but Washington fans have nothing to look forward to in the NFL; with Snyder young, healthy, and dug into DC like a tick.

Patriots def. Giants 35-14.

Highlights:

  • Blocked punt leads to turnover and touchdown by Chase Winovich.
  • Daniel Jones throws touchdown pass to Golden Tate, the very first against the Patriots D.
  • Tom Brady scores two rushing T Ds from a QB sneak. Brandon Bolden brings another in.
  • Marshal Newhouse shits the bed as left tackle for the sixth straight week, costing the Pats a fumble and a turnover taken in for a touchdown.
  • Kyle Van Noy recovers a fumble off a running play and takes it to the house.
  • Nugent made every single PAT, but missed a FG at 50 yds going against a strong wind.

Holy crap-Brett Maher just split the uprights with a 62 yard field goal. Amusingly, he was also the last kicker to do that, last year. This one was outside at sea level, making it a little more impressive.

So the Jets have defeated the Cowboys (y'all still Dem Boyz?) to claim their <checks notes> first win of the season. Congrats to them. The Jets may be a punching bag, but they're our punching bag.

And the Chiefs eat another loss at Arrowhead, this time to the Texans. Apparently, Houston closely studied last year's AFCCG.

49ers dominate the Rams in their house and remain one of the last two undefeated teams in the league. I don’t want to overreact but the 49ers are going 19-0 for the next 50 years.

But for real, Kyle Shanahan looks like he’s playing madden on rookie this year.
