I picked this up as soon as the translation became available, last week. It's intriguing, but the fact that it's a graphic adventure game with Visual Novel elements is giving me problems — particularly since I'd forgotten how badly I suck at these kinds of games.

Right now, I'm in the main character's bedroom, on the night of the zeroth day of gameplay, and I can't figure out how to get to the next situation. The game won't let me leave through either exit (window or door) I've read the documents that are there, I've obtained the third gem, and I'm pretty sure that I've clicked on everything in the room already.

What more am I supposed to do, here? Neither published walkthrough is much help.

Edit: Never mind, I figured it out. God I suck at these games.

So, picking this one up now. I've heard it's really good but I'm not sure I'll be able to get past the fact that it's so old.

It is damn good ... but the gameplay is frustrating as fuck. Use the vndb walkthrough if you want to conserve your sanity. I bumped it down to an 8 from a 9 just because I suck at Adventure Games. Phoenix Wright was hard enough.

Oh, while there may seem like there are some unanswered questions at the end, reflect on the major events of the plot and everything will tie together.

Since I'm here I might as well put my reflections on this game here.

Positives

  • Plot is epic especially when everything ties together in the final route.
  • Protagonist is likable and charming.
  • Gag options are fun.
  • Unlike Ever17, the individual character plotlines are interesting in and of themselves. In my opinion anyways.

Negatives

  • Characters are a bit flat.
  • Gameplay's frustrating (Okay that's due to my stupid mistakes, but still.)
  • The final route is kind of hit or miss. It hit for me and a lot of other people, but I see plenty of valid reasons why it would miss. Since not a lot of people here have played this, I don't feel like spoiling.

when a game this old manages to feel unique thanks to its gameplay and plot, and attract enough attention to receive a fan-translation(and a very dedicated one. They did much more than just translate the game, they simply took the worst port of the game and turned it into the definitive version by combining most of the high-points of each port into a single one.)even 15 years after its initial release, you know there must be something really good about this one.

just for you guys to have an idea, there's a Japanese site(erogamescape) with a respected ranking of V Ns/ADV games rated by visitors.Yu-No is ALWAYS among the first positions it's been years, being accompanied with the likes of Clannad,Ever17,Muv-Luv Alternative(the upcoming Zero Escape from the guys that made 999 is also among them). hell,I bet anyone who had played 999 would love to try this one as well.I mean, sure it has h-scenes,including a little something that might unplease some people, but if they overlook that, they will know one of the greatest ADV games ever made.

Sounds tempting. Will pick it up but I'm leaving on a Journey to the West (to see my folks in NY) soon so I probably won't be able to comment. I'll leave that to Arha.

I got Yu-No recently, but haven't read much of it yet. But it's actually pretty simple (but annoying) with these old "adventure game" VNs. Just pick any option until the messages repeats. Look at everythink, think about everything and do anything else you can do. If you don't get a new option or the story doesn't progress further, check if any of the previous option has a new message. If looking at the friggin' sweet lamp doesn't repeat "Man, this lamp is really friggin' sweet!", but instead the game says "Actually, this lamp isn't so friggin' sweet. I should buy a new, actually friggin' sweet one.", then you know that you made progress. Of some sort.

Yeah, I'm glad that VNs stopped to pretend to be adventure games (in the western sense). It's really less repetitive and unnecessarily time-consuming this way.

Yu-No's gameplay can be annoying if you don't have a guide with you and becomes lost in the point-and-click.But I still loved it,anyway.I loved 999,I loved this one,and I'm sure will love Zero Escape.

I mean, try to imagine if we had played this game back in 1996 when it was released,I'm sure anybody who had played it back then felt like they never played something like that before.

The parental incest in the game is very off-putting along with the gratuitous panty shots but the story is epic and I rather liked the 'jump around the flowchart' mechanism although a walk-through for that is highly recommended as someone else said.

I have no idea.

Unless there's more to it than just Ayumi, the parental incest thing seems forced. They've known each other for six months so I don't even know why he accepts her as his mom so easily.

Am I remembering this wrong? Ayumi's been his mom since he was a little kid. They even show flashbacks.

I have no idea.

Mitsuki is kinda boring. This is supposed to be the Mitsuki/Eriko route, right? Why couldn't the romance have been with Eriko instead?

Eriko is a much better character [lol]. I was somewhat depressed when I found out that she didn't have a route.

Aaaand I'm stuck. What is with Mitsuki never ever bothering to tell me shit? Wandering between the mansion and the school without the faintest idea of how to get any further after clicking on everything I can see.

The coast? The company? Triangle mountain? The city?

I can understand if you accidentally skipped a step or two while using the FAQ. I did that too, and it stalled me for a couple hours straight.

I can only go between the mansion and the school gates. Trying to meet up with Mitsuki after she called saying Ryuuzouji hadn't changed at all.

Try clicking around the mansion obsessively. The main door in particular. Also try the infirmary.

Can't get into the school. I'll go click around the mansion some more I guess. Nothing. I hate you Mitsuki why are you never anywhere logical.

For no reason whatsoever it finally let me into the school.

Oho! Mitsuki really does die! I was hoping she would.

Ayumi route. Tell each other things already! Just tell her Toyotomi is an ass instead of ogling her boobs already! Damn.

Wow, I really want to hit both Ayumi and Takuya more than Toyotomi.

So do I, I'm just laughing at how the game tells you exactly what science is and then says they're going to ignore all that in favor of wild suppositions.
