Did anyone catch the first episode of this on BBC Three tonight? I thought it was rather good.

Yeah, I saw it too. Really enjoyed it. Not sure where it's going, but it definitely has potential.

Plus Daniella Nardini as a vicar with a gun is brilliant.

I'm struggling to find information on it anywhere, though. Wikipedia redirects to some indie band and we don't have a page here yet.

I thought it was a very promising opener. I especially liked the writing — some of the dialogue was great, especially from Mac, and the connections between the characters were established without being too heavy handed. I'll be sticking with this one.

I See Dead People

The ash kept reminding me of the Silent Hill movie, but as a whole it kept reminding me of Pulse (the American remake of Kairo), what with dead people "bleeding through".

Yup, it did look good, indeed! Caught it on iPlayer. Chances are, soon there'll be a TV Tropes page for it. Btw, is it me or was Paul's mum in DW (The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit)?

Yes, Claire Rushbrook played Ida Scott in that episode and also the magazine editor in Spaced.

Hurrah.

When I first saw it, I missed who the writer was. I looked it up afterwards and was quite surpised to find that it wasn't Paul Cornell. What with the badass lady vicar (he loves writing female vicars for some reason) who mixes Christianity with magic, and the general creepiness, I could have sworn it was him!

Saw the second one yesterday. Did they actually use the word "angelic" in last week's episode?... really loved it, but the ridiculously small wings at the end of the trailer for next week sort of broke my suspension of disbelief. Only a small detail - but how's he gonna fly with that?

Three quarters into episode 2 and I realised it just feels like I'm forcing myself to sit through this. The characters are mostly charmless kitchen sink clichés, the dialogue grates and the monsters feel like horror-by-numbers - traditionally "scary" ideas like death, cannibalism and sinister prophecies, just sort of thrown together without rhyme or reason.

Probably won't bother with the next one.

As always, YMMV. Even if most themes aren't new, the show's still tremendously good fun. People still watch True Blood, don't they? ;)

Yeah, YMMV. I'm not saying it's inherently awful or that nobody else should enjoy it. There were a couple moments in the second episode that made me laugh, I'll admit. The episodes are so long, though, and most of what happened just felt embarrassingly predictable.

Maybe the problem was that I approached it as a horror/mystery series, when it looks like it's more of a fantasy series.

I read a number of books when I was younger which involved "Realistically written teen in mundane life is exposed to..." and then typically the sentence is completed by "...single sci fi/fantasy concept" although one time it was "machine guns and german spies".

This is one of those. I know just what to expect. It's not really an excuse for kitchen sink character cliches and grating dialogue. It just let's me know what scale to match it against. It's middling maybe.

I also liked Episode 3 a lot. I liked it when the wings first appeared, that was really funny.

Acting-wise, I think everyone's really good, and the writing is brilliant. There are places where it's genuinely quite creepy like that whole stuff with the "Main" Fade in that horrible chrysalis/womb/thing in the tunnel.

Plus, Sophie Wu and the actor who plays Paul sure are nice to look at. wink

xx

Glad to see that Paul's sister's acting a bit less like Lauren Cooper played straight... Otherwise, still love this show! grin

Worth a second series, I think. But I think they need to commission more episodes if they do, six didn't really give enough time to explore everything that was going on.

And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)
