They're not close enough to talk about features yet, but there's twelve screenshots on the site.

ETA: Also, Taleworlds has left Paradox, so we'll have to see who they get to publish the games when they come out.

Got this game for free on GOG. What should I know?

Stick 'em with the pointy end!

EDIT: But seriously, it's a sandbox. Feel free to mess around until you're comfortable with the mechanics and a particular character build.

Have fun. There's no story and the missions have fairly forgiving time limits unless you're playing a massive mod that grows the map ten times its normal size. Then you're probably going to be rushing to deliver a message only to find out that Your Princess Is in Another Castle! and has been for three days. tongue

Here's a hack for the game: The AI can't handle enemies who run circles around them. Literally. Archers aim where you are now, not where you're going, so if you circle around them on a fast enough horse, they'll blow through arrows and miss. With enough of them around they'll still hit from time to time, of course, but if you're fast enough and barely in trigger distance, you'll probably outlast their arrow supply.

Lancers on horseback are mostly the same way. So, again, just dance around them and hope the landscape doesn't get in your way.

I aided in a rebellion, usurped a throne, married a wealthy lord with some estates, declared independence, then proceeded to take over half the country.

so do something like that

Maintaining that initial army needed to conquer land is haaard. You need to train everyone up and then have half your army die from a bad fight. Then find yourself starved for money as everyone runs away from you, and your lord inexplicably decides to make peace with everyone.

The Poland-Lithuania save I have is on hold for now, so I'm continuing the more neutral character I have. We're quite powerful already, but we're more or less the "deserter/rebel/bandit handlers" of Eastern Europe. LOL We're The Cavalry for that 8-15 man patrols of the various factions that get outnumbered.

i don't remember the last bad fight i had in warband since i keep pretty disciplined formations: infantry tight in a line at the bottom of a hill, archers spread out 10 paces up a hill behind them, and you leading a cavalry unit to harass the enemy lines and keep the flanks clean.

fire & sword, on the other hand, those got messy.

It's not messy in Fire and Sword if everyone has horses...huehuehue

Depends on how the enemies fight. Even on horseback, fighting guns can get horrific. That first volley opens up and the front of your line just splinters as men and horses go down. I had a lot of fun fortifying my position with wagons, blocking the back of the fort with halberdiers, and shooting everything that came my way. It rarely worked, mind you, but it was pretty damn fun doing a shooting gallery.

ETA: In Warband, it's fun grabbing a mod with a massive map, and just roaming around hunting bandits and weaker factions. Honor doesn't really do very much for you compared to the haul you can get from a raid. Just pick your targets carefully.

I relate this story a lot because it was my first crazy f&s battle. Basically it was me fighting with the horse dudes, maybe 600 of us vs 200 Swiss dudes. I'm riding with the vanguard and we charge through some trees and as soon as we pop out the other side there's a line of Swiss pikemen and guns on a hill and it suddenly erupts in smoke andike half the van goes down, and the rest crash into the pikes and get taken down. We end up winning but it costs like 400 men.

I know, that's what I was thinking about. Just didn't know who went through it. I've never gotten far enough to bother with faction battles outside of cheating runs where weapons didn't matter cause I was one hitting forty men at a time.

I got the vanilla version from GOG. Can it be modded?

I had my entire army killed because I ran into the wrong dude.

I just don't feel like playing it again after that.

Is this a Jo Jo reference?

[up][up]I don't see why not. I guess it doesn't come with the praticity of Steam Workshop, but it doesn't get the bugs eithernote . Nexus Mod might be a good place to start.

On that note, may I ask people here for mods recommendations? I plan to stick mostly with the vanilla setting, but I am curious if there is good gameplay improvements mods. The ones I found that seemed interesting were the native Expansion and the Diplomacy mods. Are they worthwhile?

I lost motivation to play With Fire and Sword after I died due to somehow having no backup when I went to help on a quest and my sword arm moved too slowly to hit anyone.

[up] (x4) It should be. Even on the Steam version, the installer creates a folder in My Documents that you should be able to manually drop mods into, which is basically how I install mine; I don't like dealing with Steam Workshop, and most of the good mods are on the Tale Worlds forum (EDIT: Or the Nexus or ModDB) as well.

The Last Days of the Third Age is a Lord of the Rings mod that is compatible with both original M&B and Warband. It's a bit different from normal Mount and Blade, but still very fun and pretty polished too.

[up]That was a reply to me? As I said, I want the vanilla setting. I am sure there are great total conversion mods out there, but it is not quite what I am looking for. I am looking for gameplay mods, mostly. Or otherwise mods that don't alter the whole setting.

Check out one called Diplomacy. It gives you greater control while building your own empire, makes trade better, and improves your ability to interact with nobles.

[up][up] Tried out the Floris Modpack yet? It sounds like it might be up your alley; a substantial all-around content overhaul, but it keeps the default setting (and it's highly customizable as well; you can enable or disable certain features as you please).

[up][up]This is one of the mods I've found in my own research. Seemed nice, but it is good to see someone else recommending it.

[up]Yes, that is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for, thanks.smile I will test it out.

PS:It seems the Floris pack includes Diplomacy. How convenient!
