So the current pic does not really show the unhappyness part, (IMO the trope needs work for all dull eyes as it can be lifeless tramatic also Mind-Control Eyes or rarely signs of power, and other things but thats besides the point.)

This one here shows her tearing up and having those eyes

In both those pics there the girl looks like she's smiling, so one could think she's crying tears of joy. I don't think they meet the "unhappy" criteria either.

[up] I got the same impression.

She looks much more blissful than unhappy without knowing the context. She looks like she's smiling.

I didn't think we needed to go that far, need something there to show off exactly what the dull/flat eyes look like as well it's hard to describe to a person who hasn't seen it before especially since Anime Eyes change wildly.

(I personally think this should be about dull eyes in general sadness/lifeless is just one of the ways especially since Mind-Control Eyes doesn't show this at all anymore as that was removed but that's a bit off topic... Waiting for TRS to open up again... 4 TRS threads I am want to make.)

???? thats not this at all.

This trope is going from

To

Note: this is not an example as the trope is written as its not done via sadness / lifelessness / Lost The Will To Live etc it was done via Mind Control, (It can also be used to show Power.) (hence earlier issue that it should be more general.) but that probably doesnt matter nobody will recognize where its from...

That's still not the trope, for one thing her eyes are still shiney, and for another she doesn't look unhappy, Eddie.

[up][up] I've seen that waitress pic before (if it's the one I'm thinking about, I can't look at Flickr right now) when I was looking at Thousand-Yard Stare examples on the web, and there's not enough emphasis on her eyes to be able to clearly get the idea across. Raso's last suggestion is more clear than anything I've seen so far, including the original pic, and considering that anime/manga make up the majority of the examples and the specific effect is described in anime terms, this is one that we may want to leave with such a pic.

Eddie's last suggestion looks like it would fit some kind of eye or expression trope, but not necessarily this one. Is there one for solid black irises?

There is also this which is kinda sorta unhappiness its quite a bit more on the anger side. (which is covered by this trope in the description)

Well, if it is about eyes losing their shininess, there will need to be a before and after. Without that it just looks like artist's shortcut eyes, to me.

And we could make an effort to find something other than Anime or Manga.

[up] For the former, that's exactly why I like Raso's last suggestion. For the latter, I'll try to look through the rest of the examples tonight, but I'm not promising anything as far as results.

@Tuomas: But my picture showed lipstick marks (a mix between forceful kiss and dull eyes of unhappiness) XD....

Tuomas Since: Mar, 2010

But nothing in those lipstick marks indicate they come from a forceful kiss. If I'd saw the pic without context, I'd interpret it as someone crying of happiness after being kissed by someone she likes. Lipstick marks + smile = usually a sign of happiness in fiction.

[up] Of those, the third Nanoha pic (?) is the only one I really care for, and even then I like Raso's better.

Raso's before and after has been the clearest at showing the trope.

[up] Decent for Image Links, but still not as good as Raso's pic (or frodobatman's reworking of it)
