They claim to not have religion? Really? Never heard anything like that. Not from Japan, anyway. I've only heard it from some western folks who don't seem to understand the concept of a non monotheist religion. As far I know, Japan is a fairly religious country.
But, yeah, I think the root is in its religion. Since it is Shinto, specifically, if would explain why other Asians (like dRoy) don't get it either, as Shinto is unique to Japan.
Can I rephrase that? "The majority don't have a specific religion." They attend religious events as cultural events. But when it comes to defining a religion....

...a little brother should belong to his older sister, right? - Orimura ChifuyuThis is also something that root on the monotheist thinking, I assume. The two main religions of Japan are Buddhism and Shintoism. As far I know, you can be a 'member' of both(and more), as they are not self excluding. Japanese people don't "self define" as a member of any religion because it is not how their religion work, I think.
PS:IT seems, however, that Japanese people do say they are not affiliated with any religion at all (including saying they are atheists/agnostics). Still, as said, religion root in culture, so it doesn't matter much. Furthermore, despite what they say they do still seem to practice religion anyway (even in urban area, most houses has a Buddhist altar, so says Wikipedia).

This level of trolling is reasonable for Commander Obvious. What do you think of this, everyone?Noooo. Not lil Azu-nyan!
I think this sums it up best...
Taketatsu Ayana does an H-anime voice: otaku rage
Dan Green does an H-anime voice: fans go "OH GOD MY CHILDHOOD" at first, but then go "I'M SURPRISINGLY OKAY WITH THIS" afterward

Neither goony beard-men nor rainbow-haired she-twinks will stand in the way of my dreams!I don't think it matters whether or not they identify with a religion or even believe in God or gods. The fact remains that it's a part of their culture that they grew up exposed to, which it's plausible to imagine permeates the way they perceive the world.
I honestly don't think Shintoism has much to do with it. Some fans of American film actors can be the same way.

Idolmaster is doing good and that all the fandumb threats are just the fans being tsundere: they still bought the game :P....
...a little brother should belong to his older sister, right? - Orimura ChifuyuI'm surprised nobody's said "Madonna-Whore Complex" yet. Too bad There Are No Therapists.

...a little brother should belong to his older sister, right? - Orimura ChifuyuIt's always the fanatics who ruin everything... yes, even otaku...
Neither goony beard-men nor rainbow-haired she-twinks will stand in the way of my dreams! To the point that otakus destroyed any Ayana Taketatsu goods they had, Aya Hirano style.
Uh could I ask people to stop using the word "otaku" without "some" in front of it? Not all otakus are like that.

Then we can just all agree that this purity concept is related to religion? I agree with your reasoning. This explains it better since Japan did have a major religion a long time ago and has seeped into it's culture. Even though they claim they don't have a religion, the roots of the way they think is related to their culture and thus the concept is still there.
