Your daily dose of guess that trope: Pandora Plea

Have you made your guess? Good.

I think the title is a reference to Pandora's box, but I'm not 100% certain. The trope is basically a character rationalizing the use of whatever weapon of mass destruction happens to be lying around by saying "if we don't use it, someone else will". This trope has been around for over a year and only has 12 wicks and 14 inbounds; not very healthy for a trope that I've definitely seen quite a few times in the past. I'm not sure if the title actually isn't good, or if I'm just missing the reference, but there is an archived discussion on the discussion page that reads "Just started. Needs A Better Name and also examples. I know there's plenty but its late and I don't want to add them all right now. -_-" Thoughts?

Eh, I don't know. I figured the plea was "Don't open Pandora's Box," but the problem is it goes farther than that. It's "Somebody is going to open the box, so it may as well be me." The title sounds like it should be a refutation to this trope, not the trope itself. Also:

Dumb name. I thought it was about evil characters getting heroes to opes a Sealed Evil in a Can by acting like a Distressed Damsel.

Can't think of anything witty, so have this instead...

Well it's not as bad as I thought. I thought it was going to reference the planet in Avatar. But still not a good name.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

My guess, before reading the trope page or all of the first comment was: Character pleas for forgiveness/mercy after opening Pandora's box?

Yeah, that name is bad. Not sure mine are any better but here goes:

You know, I hear taking too much of Guess That Trope leads to apoplexy and general dyspepsia. You really should cut down on that.

That said, I don't get this title at all. Considering that Pandora's box/jar/urn wasn't a weapon, I don't think anyone would get that it involved weaponry usage in any way. Moreover, there was no rationalization offered as to why Pandora popped the lid - she was just that curious and didn't think there would be any consequences to disobeying the gods (in fairness to her, she was one of the first humans, so she was really the prototype for warning against this behavior).

So unless this is in reference to some other Pandora, this fails at both being witty and being clear. Obvious rename candidate.

Yes, it's kind of hard to tell from definition and examples what the trope is really about. Now that I've examined it well, I'm thinking of First Use Is The Best Policy as a possible name.

Nuke Or Be Nuked Argument? (with quotations around NOBN)

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And even if it is broke, just ignore it and maybe it'll be sort of OK — like the environment."

From the description of the trope, it is not clear to me if the argument in the trope is necessarily "we use it on our enemies or else they on us" or simply "we use it or someone else will do it first". If the first case, I'd agree with Nuke Or Be Nuked Agreement, except for the agreement part — it's better as a Nuke Or Be Nuked Policy. If the second case, something closer to prfnoff's proposal.

I'm interpreting the name somewhat differently from everyone else. The way I see it, the plea is that Pandora's box is already opened, given that the weapon exists, and therefore attempts to shove it back in the box are meaningless. In which case you might as well just use it. It appeals to the irreversibility of the what has already happened, rather than any other aspect of the box.

Still a pretty terrible name.

I'd agree with Nuke Or Be Nuked Agreement, except for the agreement part

That's fine, because what I actually wrote was "argument." tongue

But yeah, "policy" sounds good too.

Anyway, trope moved, Laconic and Quotes moved and old ones cutlisted, wiks changed/corrected. Once the discussion gets moved, the page can be redirected.
