Came out with Cunning results of Tammy and Jessie at (2 x 2 = 4) and (1 x 2 = 2), respectively. It's up to Junko and Elizabeth to shed some light on this.

Sorry about the delay in posting; it turns out businesses are especially busy around the end-of-year time, which took my attention away from this.

And a big, big thank you to Alhazred. The references were unexpected, and wonderful.

No problem; i'm actually on vacation, so i have somewhat intermittent access to the internet at the moment. As for the references, there need to be more Laundry Files references in spy games. It's such a good series. smile

Incidentally, if she'd failed that impulse-control roll, Elizabeth would have plugged the rook right into the board and waited to see what happened. "Nothing" is certainly a possibility, but given this chessboard, it's not the most likely one. In her mind, it would have involved at least one feedback loop and then a lot of screaming.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, this time she's proven mature enough to resist the urge to experiment on Master's supervillain toys.

Note: the mention of the option to go back and get the mook chained to the doomsaying mechanical chess board should not be construed as endorsement of this course of action ^_^;...

And in case it wasn't clear from my description, the hallway beyond the chess room continues much further into the darkness, past the hidden door that led to the control room.

Before we begin our wonderful, touchy-feely trip down the Shadowy Corridor of DOOM, everyone give me a Skill roll!

Inaugural roll for the new mobile dice roller I installed just gave me...hold on.

6 on the dice x 3 skill + 3 points from Hard Work...

21.

O_O

You know what? I like this app.

Hmm... it appears that none of the other maids present can possibly beat that roll, with the Hard Work bonus, so i don't need any other rolls. ^_^;...

I am trying not to overuse magic and Skill rolls since that'd feel too much like trying to powergame, but in this case, Elizabeth's solution is very likely to make things worse instead of better, so I'm going ahead with it and rolling with the consequences.

Alright, everyone who rolled above 4 take SAN loss (stress points) equal to 4 divided by your Cunning (minimum 1) when you turn around and realize that the corridor behind you looks exactly like the one in front of you. grin (There are some disadvantages to being clever enough to realize that fundamental laws of the universe are being violated...)

Oy nicely done. Though Junko's probably seen something like this so she'll probably be pretty deadpan about it, I kinda see her stress not being too obvious till she hits the meltdown level that work?

[up][up]That seems to fit with Junko's MO, so that's fine. It looks like her stress explosion is... crying? Kinda hard to picture, that...

[up]Hehe, i just recalled one of the conventions of Toon, where being stupid/unobservant could sometimes save your bacon. It seemed to fit pretty well with madness-inducing perversions of reality, ala Call of Cthulhu... smile

Yeah I have been playing her pretty deadpan so far. Well yeah that's what makes it work I think, she seems like nothing get to her then all of the sudden, bam here come the water works.

So let's see that's 4 divided by 2..well that could have been worse.

Holy hell. You did!

It should be noted that while Jessie does appear to be getting farther away from the other maids, and vice-versa, from Jessie's point of view the end of the hallway still doesn't seem to be getting any closer. This produces the very strange optical effect of making it seem like the 'treadmill' is moving the others backward.

If Junko or Elizabeth beat a target of 8 with their Skill roll...

They are struck that the constantly blinking arrow symbol reminds them a little bit of... a button, like a 'Proceed?' prompt in a computer program.

Ooh dear. A bit of hilarity-in-hindsight now comes up.

I think it was mentioned waaaay back that Ms. Fruitorange is a vampire. Now...when that was brought up, it was June 2014 and The Rhesus Chart hadn't come out yet.

Between then and now, Laundry Book Five hit the shelves, introduced just what PHANGs are in the Laundryverse, and, well, they're Very Bad News indeed. For "oh god oh god oh god basilisk it now!" values of Very Bad News.

Hmmm. You know what, I don't think Elizabeth is familiar enough with the Laundry to be privy to the events of Case Rhesus Chart and V-syndrome, so she wouldn't have that instinctive emotional reaction that's otherwise reserved for unicorns and Black Pharaoh cultists. Quite apart from the fact that this isn't that kind of vampire, I think Ms. Fruitorange will be quite scary enough without Elizabeth trying to exorcise her on sight.

Just to make it clearer, in case anyone didn't cheat and read Elizabeth's hidden text observations, the 'Dialogue Wheel' at the bottom of the 'screen' has the following options surrounding it:

  1. Athletics
  2. Affection
  3. Skill
  4. Cunning
  5. Luck
  6. Will
