When this show originally aired I hated it,I don't really know why but I've since grown to like it,might have been to do with art style,or I didn't like any of Edds

Is there a DVD boxset of this show? I'd love to be able to watch it again. Also, I can never seem to find that movie...

[up][up] You should be able to find the movie on YouTube if you search for "Ed, Edd, n' Eddy's big picture show".

You can also probably find the whole show via perfectly legitimate streaming sites.

[up] Speaking of, there's apparently an official Ed, Edd, Eddy Youtube page (along with other CN shows, like Bravo, Courage, and Chowder).

However, unlike other official cartoon pages that have uploaded full-length episodes and compilations (interesting trend), you'll only find random clips.

I may have found that channel already, and then dropped it for exactly that reason. What use is a cartoon channel with just clips?

How come when I search for Ed Edd Eddy, the forum search doesn't find anything?

Also, I forgot I used to see the Dutch dub. Those English voices are kinda hard to follow, to be honest.

Only on a technicality.

It could be argued, however, that 2000 and 2001 were pretty much the 90s culturally.

(Trivia: It was supposed to premiere the same week as The Powerpuff Girls but there were production problems so the show did not debut until January of 1999.)

[up] Y'know, my mom believes that generational zeitgeists are more closely tied to the turning of the decades rather than the decades themselves. (i.e. Late 80s/Early 90s, Late 90s/Early 00s...)

...Which begs the question of what to call these eras...

I think the distinction is somewhat arbitrary. No zeitgeist period is going to fit neatly into a decade long period, or have a neat start and end date.

This appeared in my recommendations for some reason. It's... fascinating?

I've always admired the EENE fandom's older designs for the characters. They vary so much.

I wasn't aware that The 3Eds forum had died. I used to use it circa 2006-2010. That's such a shame. It always sucks when websites die. A lot of dedicated forums seem to be dying.

I don't buy the idea of the 3 Men pilot. It doesn't sound like something that ever existed.

Speaking of Older EENE headcanons, I discovered this well-put together interactive of that the characters might be like five years later:

  • Ed is still the same lovable oaf, but he benefits from a pair of glasses meant to correct his lazy eye. They make him seem a lot smarter that he actually is, which is the only reason he made it through high school. He's also taken up ballet lessons, although he'd be embarrassed if anyone found out, something unusual for him.
  • Edd is still the Morality Chain among his friends, but he's loosened up just enough so that they can enjoy what's left of their youth. The events of "Cleanliness is Next to Edness" have stuck with him; if Edd is unable to keep up with his personal hygiene for an extended period of time, he'll go mad and wallow in as much filth as possible.
  • Eddy has gone from the smallest to the bulkiest of Peach Creek ever since his dad's genes kicked in, triggering a long overdue growth spurt. Ironically enough, he's matured the least, still cooking up his trademark ill-fated scams (though at least he asks for 25 dollars instead of cents). Even more ironic is that he has a job at the Candy Store, but no-one knows since no-one has even bothered to visit the place in years.
  • Nazz is the center of a most peculiar Love Triangle: while she and Kevin are ostenibly an item, ol' Bazooka Chin isn't exactly boyfriend of the year. Edd once attempted to get closer to Nazz by dressing as Kevin, not realizing that she'd wind up thinking that he actually was Kevin, while the real Kevin winds up undoing whatever progress Double D would make with her. Unfortunately, Edd simply doesn't have the heart to come clean and end the pattern.
In general, Nazz has gotten used to getting by off of her looks, and doesn't know what to do when things in life aren't handed to her. At the very least, she's Spoiled Sweet, willing to be friends with and stick up for anyone.
  • Kevin has tried to strike a rapport with the Eds after the events of "Big Picture Show", only to find that he has no real chemistry with them. In particular, he and Eddy are still nitro and glycerin, and so Kevin tries to keep the peace by keeping his distance. Otherwise Kevin is just as into bikes and sports as ever.
  • Rolf is pursuing a higher education in order keep with his friends, although his family would rather he stay at home and tend to the farm. In response, Rolf is trying to mold Ed into a worthy successor. He's also developed feelings for Lee, but keeps quiet out of the belief that she's with Eddy.
  • Sarah is hitting puberty a little earlier than her peers, and hopes to impress Edd by trying to live down her Spoiled Brat vibes and adopting a calmer and more mature demeanor.
  • Jimmy is quite the Kiddie Kid, still having his interest in dolls and teddy bears, albeit a little more shy about it. While Sarah herself has outgrown their play-dates, she doesn't want Jimmy to feel ashamed of his interests. His friendship with Sarah has grown into romantic feelings, which has a tendency to bring out his dark side.
  • Jonny 2X4 isn't as happy-go-lucky as he once was and no longer carries Plank around, and gets nervous whenever he hears that name. While the official explanation is that the two had a falling out between then and now, the implication is that Jonny's imagination simply faded with age, something he himself doesn't realize. He still isn't good at forming his own opinions, and spends most of his time talking with someone on a familiar-looking cell phone. Who this person is, if there even is someone at the other end, is unknown.
  • The Kanker sisters are still quick to wreak havoc, even if they aren't as feared.
Lee has fully grown into the Team Mom, keeping a judgemental eye on her sisters' "boyfriends", while being completely head-over-heels over her own. She's started working out in hopes of impressing him.
Marie is notorious for being catty, envious to the point of violence, and an all-around delinquent to everyone except for Edd. Her affinity for blades doesn't help her reputation. She's also started wearing her dad's abandoned jacket.
May is the only Kanker who's really affected by the Eds' rejection, and puts extra effort into impressing Ed as a result. She's also found out the he attends ballet, and uses this to blackmail him into agreeing to partner with her.
  • Eddy's brother hasn't changed one bit, but he has found a woman he admires enough to try and better himself, which he tries to accomplish by visiting more often. Eddy dreads these visits and tries to keep everyone else away whenever big bro rolls into town. It turns out that he's surprisingly short for his age.

That was an entertaining read. Makes me wish somebody would make a comic about the Ed's based off of this blueprint.

Not sure how I feel about Jimmy or Ed's developments, but I like Sarah, Lee, and Double D's.

One episode may have referenced the 1985 western “Pale Rider”

In one episode, the boys unload their “Canadian Squirt Guns” at the Kankers but they miss every shot. The Kankers are on an island surrounded by the water that missed them, Lee Kanker asks the Edds "Are You Through?"

In “Pale Rider”, villains unleash a hailstorm of bullets into a restaurant, thinking Clint Eastwod is there. Clint Eastwood, completely unharmed, appears next to the bad guys and asks "You Through?"

[up](x5) Rewatching this, I really want an official EENE cartoon or comic where they're adults. It'd make a nice adult cartoon, like a slice of life Regular Show or Simpsons. I'd be interesting to see any sort of western cartoon do an Osomatsu-san - take a family-friendly property and make an adult sequel - but there's a lot of legal loopholes.

Oh, please no. All Grown Up has made me allergic to that format.

I'd much rather see a reboot of the original, while keeping them roughly the same age. Rebooting cartoons from the 80's and 90's seems to be all the rage these days, and EE&E is one of the popular ones from that time, so I give it a pretty good chance of happening sooner or later.

Oooh I've got a rant or two about why I don't ever want to see an EENE reboot. Like ever.

Firstly: seeing what Kevin, Rolf (Especially Rolf), Jimmy, Sarah, and the Kankers grew up to be is infinitely more interesting than just seeing modernized versions of them.

Second: what about EENE actually needs to be rebooted? It was one of the most popular, longest-running shows CN had once upon a time. A reboot implies we can do better, that we should tell different stories, but what about EENE actually needs to be told or done differently? There are such things as "timeless classics." Nobody wants or needs a reboot of Rocko's Modern Life or Rocket Power.

Third: looking at the other 80's-90's reboots/continuations:

  • I've heard nothing good about the Powerpuff Girls, and keeping all the old voice actors except the main trio's is a decision that baffles me to this day
  • Reboot The Guardian Code is a disgrace and I will hear nothing else
  • Hey Arnold got a movie to wrap up loose ends, so that was pretty safe from criticism provided you were already a fan of the series
  • Carmen Sandiego is being tackled from a new narrative direction (focusing on the titular thief instead of her being the villain), so I give it a pass
  • Jury's out on Animaniacs because it's not out yet
  • She Ra seems to have captured lightning in a bottle with its writers and vocal talent, but I wouldn't doubt being a lightning rod for feminism helped
  • I've not heard much about the Thundercats Reboot, but I'm pretty sure it was cancelled in spite of looking damn good and airing on Toonami
  • Voltron might be the odd one out here - it's a reboot and a boundary-pushing one at that, but as I never watched much of the original nor did I watch the new one further than the first episode, and seeing that there are 5 well-liked seasons on Netflix right now, it seems that there can be good reboots that respect the source material. That said, Voltron isn't EENE. Voltron was a cheesy, Super Robot show from the 90's that lent itself well to a reboot

Fourth: At best, an EENE reboot would have better animation, and at worst, none of the original cast return, the humor gets toned down, and the writing more topical and Anvilicious. A tumblr hashtag would probably start over how offensive Jimmy and Rolf are. I'm almost certain at least one of the characters would have an annoying new catchphrase. There'd probably be a new kid added to round out the cast.

Fifth: a lot of the humor, at least for me, was in just how easily you could relate to these three best friends who had nothing to do during the summer, wandering around looking for trouble and ways to get money and jawbreakers.

I doubt kids really do that these days - at least where I live, you don't see kids running around in the woods or on people's lawn or running lemonade stands anymore. You don't see kids with inanimate object best friends anymore - we've phased that out with (supposedly) better parenting guides and education - or left unattended in parks anymore.

The sorts of fights that happen in EENE were exaggerations of the sorts of fights I would see in grade school or hanging out with friends. Nowadays, if a fight happened at a younger sibling's school you'd never even hear about it.

Kids don't lounge around outside or play stickball, or jump over sprinklers. Kids don't beg their parents for quarters for jawbreakers anymore note .

How many kids do you see hanging around in junkyards these days?

note

For more proof, if cartoons/movies reflect the times we live in then I've seen more cartoons from today with jokes/plots about smartphones, internet memes, celebrity drama, twerking, rap music, etc than anything listed above.

You get my point. We're a whole lot more technologically and logistically privileged these days than the Ed's were, and it makes the show's core premise outdated.

Sixth: We're a lot more socially conscious too which decreases the humor in a lot of the the original show's dynamics. I doubt a show like EENE would even be green-lit these days if we transplanted the original cast to 2019.

  • Compare how characters like Glenn Quagmire from Family Guy and Master Roshi from Dragon Ball appear to most audiences now in the wake of Harvey Weinstein and John Kricfalusi
  • Characters like Rolf - that socially awkward foreigner who everybody loves - raise a lot more eyebrows than they used to. Look at Fez from Thats70s Show, or Apu from The Simpsons
    • Characters like Jimmy, The Kankers, and Johnny would almost certainly have to be changed - effeminate Butt-Monkey, sexual deviants, and a kid whose mental health is constantly in question and is oft-portrayed as the hippy weirdo of the cast

So in conclusion: would I want to see the Ed's rebooted in 2019, when there are no more (or certainly fewer) Planks, no famously irresponsible parents beyond the Griffins from Family Guy and maybe The Kardashians, not as many jungle gyms or incredibly interesting cul'de'sacs, or ridiculously addicting candies that every kid wants?

Absolutely not.

I'm all for cartoons that either continue the story or borrow from older ones spiritually, but please, no blatant reboots for the sake of "the younger crowd." They have Netflix. They can watch old cartoons any time they want without a reboot to coax them in.
