I know alot of you were around elementary school or middle school when this event happened.I myself was in Washington D.C. when it happened and yeah I was in the city when the Pentagon was hit.I was only seven when it happened and I really had limited grasp on the situation.I still wish I had more understanding of what happened on that fateful day.

I was going to make this thread, but I couldn't figure out how I wanted to word the OP and title.

I was in the First Grade at the time. My school had an early-morning before-school daycare program, and we were watching Sponge Bob Square Pants of all things. The teacher changed the channel, and I remember distinctly how even the older kids didn't understand what was happening, and we were angry that the cartoon was gone.

Moments after she changed the channel, the second plane struck the World Trade Center. I'll never forget that, I think. Not until the day I die.

I had no idea what was going on other than the fact that my father refused to let us outside that day and a few after it. Our surfing trip was ruined and me being the ignorant little kid I was, was pissed to holy hell about this.

I don't recall how I actually reacted to the news of what happened when I first heard it. I do know that some time after I found an old Nintendo Power magazine of mine that talked about some place that was in the World Trade Center. It involved Pokemon I think. I then felt very bummed about it all because the building was gone and I would never get to see this thing and whatever else was there.

I was in grade five. I remember that I woke up in the morning, and my parents were standing in front of the television holding each other and watching the news. That's about all I remember.

Be not afraid...

My dad, actually, was driving at the time, and ended up stopping at a rest stop to go to the bathroom. When he went into the little store—which had a wall TV—everyone was watching it, and when he saw it he asked "what movie is this? It has really good special effects."

Obviously, they had to tell him that it wasn't a movie...

At the time I was a young Marine in college. After the second plane hit I got into my uniform packed my sea bag and grabbed up my phone. I sat in the lobby of the dorm watching news and waiting for a phone call all day.

Oh and the little twerp dancing in the chow hall yelling Yay Allah nearly got a beat down.

Jesus, that must have been awkward.

I was a highschool student myself at that point. Truthfully, it was kind of surreal. It was the quietest day of school ever. I had an astronomy class at the time and I didn't know why the teacher wasn't running a lesson, so I just tried to finish up my math homework. I didn't find out what happened until later that morning. Felt... removed really. I mean, I'm in Texas, miles away from what happened.

I was about ten. I came home from school, and saw it all over the news. I mean, literally, all over the news. There was no channel that wasn't running a story on 9/11. I'd never seen any story that big, and I've never seen one since.

I was at California. I'd never been to New York, and I didn't know anyone living there... I distinctly remember not feeling anything at all when it happened. I was 12 back then.

I was in a marketing class.

My dad was watching the live feed after the first tower was hit. He saw the plane was thinking "Hmmm, that looks like it's going to crash into the seco-awp there it goes" (not his exact words).

I distinctly remember thinking "Ummm, yeah guys: this is kind of the world we live in. Large groups of people die on a regular basis."

I didn't take 9/11 serious cause I was ten. My mom asked me what the forecast was and I kinda got annoyed that all the news was that some building was on fire. Later when I found out it fell over I still didn't care because buildings fell down all the time. I was so confused when people where crying and acting weird.

Please.

My parents kept me home that day, apparently for fear I'd wind up...getting hurt somehow.

I was in middle school.

My dad told me to remember 9/11. I too was a bit confused why so many people were so sad and crying. I did not know anyone affected by it.

Were I any older on Sept 11, 2001 I would have run off to enlist the day after the attacks. (I was nearly 16 at the time.)

I remember... I remember at the time that the whole thing was largely meaningless to me, but I knew that it made everyone around me sad, and I knew that it caused people to die and other people had done it for what was apparently no good reason.

At the time, I only had a vague idea of "the US is good because we live here," and hadn't yet translated it to love of country on my own and the self-identity of patriotism, but I'd probably have been like Tom if I hadn't been seven years old...

I was in 6th grade at the time, in band class. I wouldn't say I fully grasped the entirety of the situation, but I understood enough. I did grasp that we got attacked, and I was shocked.

It was a weird feeling I experiences that day - a mix of anger, sadness, and fear.

I was in fifth grade at the time, with a throbbing headache. Was pretty confused when they herded us into a classroom with a TV to watch the news about some building burning down. I don't recall the footage being very clear or anything that was said on the broadcast so it just seemed like an awkward waste of time. About an hour later, I started feeling worse and called home sick. I remember being confused when the principal asked "Do you want to go home because you feel sick or because of what happened today?"

Even after hearing exactly what happened, I didn't really feel anything. I didn't/don't know anyone personally in NYC or DC, and most of the people around me didn't either. I remember people talking on the bus the next couple of days about things like "You could see the devil's face in the smoke!" and reading a story in the newspaper about how people were jumping out of windows in the Towers before they burned down or collapsed and feeling bad about that, but nothing about the Towers going down specifically really resonated with me any more than hearing about a wildfire in California or some serial killer in North Dakota.

They lost me. Forgot me. Made you from parts of me. If you're the One, my father's son, what am I supposed to be?

I was in my first couple of days as a high schooler—9th grade. On that day, school pretty much ended at second period, I remember.

I was entering Grade 1. I remember the newspaper and everything. We listened to the radio in class, and I wrote a letter to President Bush saying I was sorry the buildings "got blown up". I drew a picture of the towers on fire.

My dad still remembers that picture.

I think I was in 7th grade. During school that day, the kids were constantly talking about "something". Then I come home and (at the time I was in a study group with some students and tutors) we were discussing just what happened.

Slowly over time I found out more about just what happened, and it's really tragic. It also produced some undesirable side effects nationwide.

I was living in Seattle at the time, 20 years old...I showed up for a shift at Red Robin and someone said "hey, you need to see this shit". I looked up to see a 747 flying into the trade towers.

I remember thinking "Wow, that looks kinda fake"...and then someone told me no, it wasn't; several thousand people had just really died.

then I thought, "Oh shit, we're at war."

Guess I wasn't all that wrong.
