I'm working on building a fictional society of people with unusual abilities and I'm stuck on coming up with some traditions they might have. So far all I have is a tradition for arranging their children's marriages by the time they are old enough to leave the house.

Any other ideas? Related to powers maybe.(perhaps a sort of celebration for children when they develop their power) The more tradition bound, old fashioned members of the group tend to also be rather pretentious. (believing themselves morally above the Muggles)etc)

I really don't think that they would be exceptionally different from the ordinary people they live with and are a part of.

Banned entirely for telling FE that he was being rude and not contributing to the discussion. I shall watch down from the goon heavens.

I know they wouldn't be totally but I can imagine they would have some societal sorts of things.

...can they turn it off?

If not, they might not be able to get to the "forming traditions" stage. The psychology of a race of people that were forced to hear all the thoughts around them would be irrevocably fucked up beyond all belief.

If they can turn it off, I don't see how they'd be that different, other than possibly through different history and religion. They would have different standards (i.e. common courtesy with thought-listening, etc.) but as for traditions, I can't really help you...

Technically telepaths and empaths are sort of separate from the rest of them and those abilities work differently. As such telepaths are outsiders in the society. I fear I might have been a bit misleading with "ESP" the 'normal' abilities are things like tekeinesis and metal bending (with some shapeshifting) Telepathy (and empathy) tends to be sort of like their version of a mental disorder.

Thanks anyways. So far I figure that the only major traditions are arranging marriages and throwing a sort of celebration and giving gifts to a kid whose power has just developed.

There was an episode of Kino's journey that had a village, in which, mass telepathy had been made possible. Noone was able to live with any other because they became too paranoid( or something, it's been a year since I watched it.)

If they can all read each others' minds, it's possible for them to figure out what others might want. Maybe it can be a tradition to help arrange the future career of a younger person.

Forget the tropes until after you're done.

So you've got one already, prejudice against telepaths. ESP is extra-sensory perception, telekinesis hardly qualifies for that. Perhaps it's impolite to use telekinesis when serving at the table when you're receiving a visit from your friends, or using it when you're visiting someone. But I would hesitate before giving them any traditions related to telekinesis — it's easy, I think, to overdo it.

Yup.

There may be a change to a tradition or two to possibly accomodate the ESP abilities and such, but it wouldn't be that different.

If these people start making completely new ones, then you can have some fun with it *
