Then you just have to hope that you're more preferable a job candidate than enough other people.

Well hasn't it always been like that in...well every job ever? Especially the art industry [lol]

I feel that "post scarcity" is less meaningful than "too cheap to meter".

Well the reason why I specifically used the term "post-scarcity" is because I was referring to a situation where people no longer have to worry about their needs (such as food, water, shelter, sewage, clothing, furniture, and for that matter, internet connection), and thus have all the free time in the world to pursue their own wants/desires/interests.

Most people still have to do that at one point of their life.

Better yet, you could become a more preferable candidate.

If Humanity is done with art, humanity is done in general IMO.
This.

Seconded.

Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal.

If Humanity is done with art, the world is a better place.

Modified for my purposes.

I've been the primary bread-winner the past four years, a change from living more or less off my parents since college (I worked after high school and on college breaks, so don't judge me on that). These four years have seen a lot of changes in my world view, and I'm just coming to terms with them. I have fewer leisures than before (we got rid of cable, I almost never buy video games except a used one every few months, and going out to eat is a special occasion), but the ones I maintain I feel I've earned for going on. So yeah, I still play Super Robot Wars, I read Nietzsche for pleasure, and I hang out on internet forums (not as much as before, but eh).

The biggest differences are my concerns for the future. I'm much more critical of myself for not pursuing this or that creative venture, or for not having the right education for my preferred career. Still, 5 years ago I didn't picture myself working at a library but I'm pleased with the work I do. It may not be "post-scarcity", but it's not a miserable life either.

And I agree that art is vitally important, even frivolous popular art. Inspiration and outlets of expression matter, both to the creator and the audience. To eliminate art is to eliminate creative spirit; potentially doable, but disastrous for humanity.

Art won't die, we've been doing it forever.

[up] It won't die, but it can be suppressed to an arbitrary degree, and that's where the danger lies.

Oh no. It would survive even that, and quite fine. Either managing to create decent works within arbitrary boundaries or pushing and subverting them, creating counter-cultures. Pretty normal.

@Deboss: Keep in mind that the absence of art means that you don't even get to see dat ass in your avatar.

@Ratix: See, I'm at the "buy videogames rarely and eating out is a special occasion" stage already.

Art isn't quite the same thing as entertainment.

Art won't die, we've been doing it forever.

We've also been operating in a scarcity environment.
