Meh. As much as I bellyache about politics, 90% of it is just cost of living issues.

I mean, say what you will about Detroit, but I had a pretty low cost of living up there.

I'd move to Texas but, well, wages are plummeting.

[up][up]Yeah, there mostly in the more rural areas of California up in Rocklin where I am currently going to college is very conservative. It might be predomiantly white but the people are so friendly that its hard not to love it.It does have minorities but they are fewer than in places like San Jose.

I like California and enjoy living in nice cultural pools of doom. It's nice being able to find Thais, Koreans, Mexicans, white people, blacks, and more all in different parts of one city.

Living in areas where there's basically one or two cultural groups is odd. I get used to it, but I far prefer it if there are large pockets of every cultural group you can think of in one place.

^8.00 last I checked.

Yeah,I like to think of California as a real world version of a Fantasy Kitchen Sink. You find just about anything here and mix it up with something else to make something new.I can gripe about Politcal Correctness but its fun seeing many people of different backgrounds as just a normal part of the setting.I even better I can consider California a Ninja Robot Zombie Vampire sorta state.

California's median rent is apparently the highest in the country.

@ Kino: However bad you think San Francisco is, Berkeley works hard to stay tied neck-and-neck for the craziest part of the Bay Area. I should know, my grandparents are about two miles from the UC.

California politics are screwy mostly because anyone who get enough signatures can put on the ballot a choice to amend the state Constitution, which I believe theirs is the most amended, ever. Those amendments also don't have to be reviews the way amendments from the legislature are, to ensure they're not contrary to the US Constitution and Supreme Court decisions, so they end up getting nullified more often. Term limits for the state legislature also mean that the power for the state lies almost entirely in the hands of 1) their corporate donors, and 2) lifelong bureaucrats who have the political equivalent of tenure. I can understand the desire that led to the term limits, but in practice I don't think it has worked out so well.

The only other downside to California is the high prices for everything, but that's mostly because the weather is so awesome. I mean, bright sunny days and good weather practically year round, outside the occasional earthquake, or the yearly fires if you live up in the desert highlands above San Diego or LA.*

The weather certainly makes up for it if you're not a social recluse who hides inside with their computer and playstation every day.

One of the best things is the number of state and national parks around the state. The Sequoias (where the giant redwood trees are), half of Death Valley, Yosemite, 2/3rds of Lake Tahoe - and those are just the nationally well-known ones.

That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - Silasw

I'd like to see San Fran and Berkeley fall into the fucking ocean.

But yeah, our politics are broken as hell. Our gun laws don't make any frigging logical sense, gays can't marry, in many areas veterans are treated like criminals(see top of post) and we handle immigration very poorly.(I'm not in the crazy "Let's build a wall camp!" but sanctuary cities are not the answer)

It's like we took the worst ideas that Repubs and Dems have ever cooked up, and implimented them.

Oh, we also can't budget for shit. All that waiting till the last minute crap that you guys saw with the federal budget? We do that in California. Every fucking year.

I suspect that that'll shortly become a national trend, rather than a once in a lifetime thing.

How is it that your minimum wage is $8.00?

We have a really high standard of living. I pay 1000 a month(well, my roomate and I split it) for a 2bd 1bth condo in a shit neighborhood. The AC doesn't work, it wasn't furnished when we moved in, and we have water pressure problems constantly.

Living in California, I feel alienated from the states to the east of me. It's not that people who live in the Midwest are all bigots, but when I encounter them on these forums, they always seem so used to having to listen to bigots.

Really high standard of living? HA! Suuuuure. (As an explanation for high minimum wage, anyway)

Canada's minimum wage is like, 10 bucks in some places o_o

There are conservatives in Cal?

Well of course there are, Orange County is notoriously one of the most conservative regions in the USA.

I haven't spent enough time in other states to compare standard of living, but our house prices are insane.
