Yes, it exists. There's even a sequel! Me, I'm going for the sequel once I have the money; I already have the demo.

Anyone else interested in this game?

Likely busy writing something.

I'm downloading the Demo to see about it.

I made the grave error of looking at their forums though, badly made political debates and such :s

I bought the game on Steam sell.

Had a spectacular initial run, with France.

Like, mindblowingly awesome. I established fiscal sovereignty, eradicated povery, inequality, and unemployment, finished with almost One Hundred Percent Adoration Rating, and went to freaking Mars.

Then, every single new playthrough that I do, I go into perpetual high deficit, low credit rating, and utter misery, whether it be Germany or the UK, I always get royally fucked.

[up] You gotta adapt different strategies for different nations. I did very well with Germany where I invested a lot of money into education and technology initially. That didn't work with the US which already had "Technological Advancement" (or whatever it's called, Germany doesn't start with it for some reason) but also a bunch of initial problems.

The funny thing about Brain Drain is that, if your economy is strong enough already and your education and science institutions work well enough, you can easily do without those guys.

The punitive tax on wealth, though, that's too much. Who does that?

So I went through a lot of effort to diminish religious membership in Canada, because they were causing all kinds of horrible trouble!

As a result, I am assassinated!

It's a real game, yup. It's been around for a while and has had some expansions and mods made for it since then.

I think the thread was originally made for an earlier iteration in the series, but yes. Democracy 3 is currently on sale on Steam, as are two of its DLC thingies.

[up][up][up][up] I always eradicate religious people because that's much simpler to me than appease them and I almost never get assassinated. Infact, the "Survivor" achievement is one of the few I don't have and don't seem to get.

Problem is, the pool of available ministers in Canada and the US tend to like religion and/or capitalism, so I find myself rather blocked with my Tax & Spend reforms...

[up] Screw both of those. Religious people hate science and science is great and capitalists get mad at me for events I can't influence at all.

On my best play through, I managed to make a Germany that was a beautiful egalitarian, environmentally friendly, finacially stable socialist utopia. Feels good, man.

Do all religious people in the game actively oppose science? If so, how reductionist and blatantly biased.

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.

Not all, but rather, the more religious people you have, the more that tiny fraction of them that is both militant and anti-science will try to kill you if you put science forward too much. It doesn't help that scientific advances cause religious membership to fall.

Legalizing drugs (up to LSD) and prostitution (completely) are of the first things I do, because it kills violent crime and because I can tax it. Community policing is also very cost-effective.

The game seems to have a bias towards socialism, though. I mean, what kind of weak-ass argument is "it's a distortion of the market"? It sounds like "it will piss off Capitalists because reasons".

[up][up]I think that a bias towards socialism is inherent in any country-management sim; I mean, if a country can't benefit by taxing money and spending money, management will pretty much consist of doing nothing.

Anyway. Considering getting the third game, but I was unimpressed by the first one. Have there been significant improvements since?

Playing canada: how do U GDP? bonus points if I can make it past my first year without being killed by religious fanatics/a capitalist overthrow.

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

I'm going to try this strategy:

first, a government reshuffle, get the most ministers that give the most political capital. They'll probably be religious and capitalist. No matter. Use the capital to increase the GDP by subsidizing the industry, giving tax shelters, and other shit that the pennybags just love. Then invest in private education grants (no complaints about free market distortion there, huh?) and increase the budget of the secret services, as well as instating wiretapping, ID cards, and community policing.

Then once you've got yourself protected from potential killers, turn the tables on them by going into the socialist reforms, again education and industry, and piss every minister off. When they start begging to "spend more time with their families", you do just that, and bring up a socialist, secular, liberal government. Starting with Evolution, elimination of school prayer, and elimination of other forms of State-funded religiosity.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong?.

One thing I don't understand is why so many ministers are both environmentalists and capitalists. Environmentalists reforms usually demand either subsidizing stuff, taxing stuff, or regulating stuff, which are things capitalists hate. How's that supposed to work?
