On what basis are gay guys assumed to be feminine?

[up]They're mostly grammar schools (like mine). I mean, the fact I didn't do violence, liked pink, and preferred romcoms to action films kinda helped get me Mistaken for Gay.

in the end, everyone left with the impression I was bisexual, which is part-right.

Real men like pink though like that Dale Burns character. Also, I only like action films if its a cross genre film. I've never been in a fight in my life but no one calls me gay.

The issue some have with Camp Gay stereotypes is the people who feel that to be properly gay they must "Flame-on" so much that you can make smores just being in their general vicinity.

While I'm getting better at dealing with campiness, it still grates on my nerves immensely. I'm not quite so "hit them on the head and yell at them to Stop Being Stereotypical" as I used to be. I've never understood the need to make being gay the "Big Thing" in your personality.

Gay stereotypes are like Black stereotypes.

Yes. Most of them are true to a certain degree.

No, most of them are not all crammed onto a single person.

Some black people have fat lips, some have afros, some are really tall, some speak jive and some have squished noses.

There are much fewer with all of those traits.

And even fewer with that as their defining personality trait.

That's always what I've used to compare, anyway.

[up]In the case of black people conforming to stereotypes, though, that has to do with racial genes and ethnic culture. Of course, I'm not trying to say that they all display those traits, or all at the same time, but when they do, it's not really something you can compare with stereotypical gay people.

Nevertheless, do you really expect notions of masculinity and femininity to comprehensively cover everything?

Yes

Shit, I would be considered gay by some because most of my friends are hetero women.
Apparently, some people have ruled out the possibility that a straight guy would be friends with several women in the hopes that one of them would be willing to be more than friends with him. tongue

Oh, and what a thorough rebutall you made there, Kino! It sure addressed my points SO well, yes siree!

And yet, when people meet gay men these days, they come in with expectations of feminine traits. Why?
Machismo. Even in more liberal places of our planet it is still a relic from a period when homosexuality was considered unmanly.

@Inhopelessguy Wow cool I went to a single sex school as well smile It's no longer a grammar school but it has carried on most of it's traditions such as being an all boys school. And I guess I see your point about it being kinda a big thing from my own experience coming out. There was a big discussion about it in the sixth form common room the day after.

Many people had their suspicions as I remember a mate telling me a few years ago that in his business class that there was talk amongst a few people of my sexuality, this being before I was 100% sure myself, but most I think didn't have much of a clue at all as I don't really conform to much of the stereotypes. A lot of people thought I was just joking.
