That's...what? I have no idea what this is. Am I missing something?

It looks like it's supposed to represent the horror that was Hawkman's continuity at the time(my guess is that each face is supposed to represent a different incarnation, but I don't know enough to confirm that). The caption could possibly better emphasize the metaphor, though.

It does. I think it won for being a visual pun on the concept. It was explained that Hawkman has had so much different continuity that the cover was to an issue where it was made into a plot point.

I'm sure that if everyone on earth were familiar with Hawkman, that would make perfect sense on sight.

Dunno...I know Order Of The Stick did (as part of its background mythology, no less), but I don't think anything on it was concise enough to work as a page pic.
