I'd like to point out that you do not earn extra coins if you collect more than 10 coins. The cap is 10, which means 40 per Grand Prix

Of course, it's 10 per player, so with 4 local players that's 10 coins per player, per roumd

What about Versus mode? There's at least one YouTuber who swears up and down that the game keeps track of all the coins you collect (in a video that shows you the best places to farm for coins). Is he full of crap?

If so, that's disappointed. I'm about 3000 coins away from getting the gold glider.

Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Only way to really tell is to start a new game without any old save data and keep track.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the game tells you how many coins you've collected in a menu somewhere. Just jot down that number, boot up a single race at 50cc with the AI set to "Easy" and have a friend/family member keep a running tally of how many coins you've collected and how many you've lost. After the single race, compare your numbers to what the game says and there's your answer.

"At least with Lightning Bolt you're not likely to be assaulted by multiple items"

And just today on 200 cc I got hit with a Blue Shell, a Lightning Bolt, a Green Shell and then a Banana dropped one pixel infront of me, making it unavoidable.

No, I didn't get first place after all that shit. Though removing one of the things after the Blue Shell wouldn't have made a difference. Getting hit three consectuive times instead of four during the final lap would still be a guaranteed failure.

I can't say I see the satisfaction of using a Thunder Bolt if I ever got the chance to use one (I'm not too familiar with online multiplayer); I'd probably rather get a Bullet Bill or a Star instead. That would be a better catch-up mechanic.

The few times I've needed... err, voluntarily fallen behind and gotten to use the Lightning Bolt, I've found if you're too far back then it does nothing to help you. The people in the back of the pack stay shrunk for too little time and if anything it's only going to switch up the standings at the front of the race.

I can say with confidence that sometimes getting hit by it is a blessing for first place, too, given how it wipes the items across the entire board. If anything it's helpful for everyone except whoever actually got to use it.

The same is true for the Blue Shell. It's a great balancing item but it's not going to help whoever used it 99 times out of 100.

Yeah, the lightning bolt is annoying, but I find it tolerable because for the most part when I get hit with it it doesn't actually affect my placement much because everyone nearby got hit with it too. The only annoying thing is losing your item and getting shrunken for a little bit. Unlike the blue shell, where it blows you up and allows the next three people to pass you and doesn't help the person who fired it at all.

Also, regarding coins, thinking about it more I think they should do something similar to what Crash Team Racing did: that game had Wumpa fruit to collect, and when you got ten, all of your weapons got a boost.

I hardly find the Thunder Bolt affected the other racers that aren't first at all. It merely exists to piss off whoever is in the lead, and for that matter, anyone playing solo outside of 150cc. There's already ways to get the runner ups to catch up; they're called the Blue Shell, Red Shell, Super Star, and Bullet Bill.

They may as well have one of the creators go up to your house and kick you in the crotch whenever Lightning strikes.

But yeah, Lightning isn't much good...unless you're like me and you try to use it when someone is making a jump, then it can really wipe someone out, not just the dude in the lead.

Wait, the amount of time you stay shrunk depends on your placement in the race? I... I had no idea! surprised

Well, here's a mild fix for it, then. What if it only affects the people who are ahead of you? So, if you use it when you're in eighth place, the ninth-place racer will stay normal-sized, but everyone in seventh place and above will shrink?

Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Getting hit with the lightning bolt can be awesome if you picked a cart with great acceleration, because it effectively gives everyone's motion a reset. I've had more than a few matches where I was in a tense situation, then myself and the ones I was dueling with got hit with the bolt, and I used it to pull ahead and win.

[up][up] Shit, really? Has it always worked that way? I'm 90% sure that in Super Mario Kart and 64, it's entirely possible to get lightning, make your way to the front of the pack on your own, and then use it to inconvenience everyone behind you.

Playing the game again, I noticed some things:

  • The Koopa Troopas in the battle course themed after Dragon Driftway dance to the beat of the music.
  • The mini video showing 50cc is basically 100cc with half the framerate lol

Does nobody play battle mode in Deluxe? I played a game or two in Regional and only had three people with me, but Worldwide had full rooms.

In most modes I think people prefer Worldwide to Regional, so that doesn't surprise me.

I'd imagine the difference between the two in races is also sizable, as many more players as they'd both likely have over Battle.

Hmm. I haven't had any issues with regional matchmaking, but then again I haven't played MK 8 in a while.
