Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The Hammer Drones actually worked perfectly, along with the War Machine modifications.

And how much of that was Vanko? (all of it)

Vanko was the only other technician scientist with multiple things that worked, but he lost to Tony because it wasn't about winning a fight, but showing he was better.

A lot of War Machine's weapons are basic. Advanced weapons like the "Ex-Wife" suck horribly. Vanko is responsible for the Hammer Droids.

Yeah, most of War Machine's guns are LOTS OF BULLETS. Hammer didn't build bullets.

Having the Mandarin be another guy in armor would have been kind of samey, even if the armor replicated ring powers.

It would still have been a guy lounging around with his thumb up his ass while someone used his name and attract unwanted attention to his organization.

What? Why wouldn't it have been the actual Mandarin?

[up][up]With the exception of Thor's opponents, Marvel really seems to love "the same but evil". I guess the Extremis we got was actually a marked step up in changing the formula, even if they had a confusing grab bag of powers that made no sense.

Killian didn't breath enough fire during his fight with Tony.

And I don't see what's the problem with having the Mandarin be magical. Seeing a straight-up Magic versus science match in an Iron Movie would be quite great.

No offense and I don't mean you specifically, but I'm always a little surprised that all these people say they want a comic-accurate Mandarin and how we were cheated, but they apparently don't know enough about the character to know his rings aren't magic. They're alien tech.

Close enough for it not to matter.

Thor used magic against Tony, and it only supercharged him. It was magically induced lightning, but it shouldn't matter.

It does matter. Their point was that they want the movies to have distinct tones otherwise there's no point. They don't want Iron Man fighting space dragons and people with Magitek rings anymore than they want Captain America fighting demons and rogue Asgardians.

With regards to the "Smartest Men in the world" list, I find it difficult to believe that anyone who made such a list would survive for very long if Doctor Doom wasn't in spot number one.

I like Doom. But maybe that's just because I find Good Mister Richards to be just a bit of an asshole, while Doctor Doom is one classy world-conquering machine.

They're both assholes. Dr Doom is just a more charismatic and entertaining asshole.

[up]Admittedly, a good point.

Doom's an Asshole, but he's a classy, likable asshole who would probably end up helping the world once he conquered it, while Richards is... well, Reed Richards.

Ever since Civil War - especially but not solely due to Marvel Ultimate Alliance's take on it - Reed kind of creeps me out.

Oooh man, Guardians is a good time. The actual plot isn't quite that interesting, but it's obvious they want to sell you on the characters, and that's fine. It's a cool group of characters to hang out with.

Yup, Cosmo is in there and the final cameo is... Howard the Duck. It was pretty funny how they did it too.

And it's pretty uncanny how much Thanos really looks like Josh Brolin. I imagine he's mostly CGI, but they nailed his likeness.

I too have just seen GOTG. It was a pretty good movie.

My one big gripe is that Gamora and the treatment of her is the worst thing in the movie. She may be up there with Fake!Mandarin as the most infuriatingly bad character in the MCU. I was able to confirm what a friend told me months ago from meeting him personally: James Gunn is a misogynist. Really, I'm surprised by Zoe Saldana for letting all that get on film. Does she really want to be a sci-fi action female lead that badly?

There is a stinger, btw. There may be another one in the US, but the one I saw was... the Collector sitting in his wreck of a base, and he gets licked by Cosmo the dog. A voice is surprised that he let the dog lick him, and it turns out it's... Howard The Duck.

The two big questions to follow are:

  • Who is Peter Quill's dad? (and are they sticking with his pure comic identity, or making him more directly tied in with the Inhumans?
  • Why is the Collector collecting the stones?

As for the Infinity Stones, they seem pretty interchangeable now. We've had three or four, and they're all just "an energy source." I also hope Loki's scepter isn't one, because I'd have to question why Thanos would just give up one of the at most 3 in his possession.

Probably going to make him a villain if I had to guess. The Got G really lacks big villains for a sequel.
