Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

As much complaint event comics get, I do like that for the space between Disassembled and Siege the 616 universe was a constantly changing universe of events, it feels like that period of time is now a detailed history in a way.

Of course that period started with the Big Three Avengers being for ever divided and ended with them being united, it was a long period and one with consequences we're still seeing.

I think MARVEL NOW is doing things better though; taking characters in new directions which do not require extensive continuity, but are certainly rectory to long standing problems with the character. The Uncanny Avengers which saw the Avengers try and help mutant image, Superior Spider-Man which saw an aggressive attempt at improving Peter's life, and Indestructible Hulk which saw Banner employing the Hulk, Captain Marvel saw a long standing legacy character of legacy characters try to forge an independent career.

I'm not all that interested in Fear Itself and Original Sin though as crossover events though.

Certain rumors such as Janet van Dyne's death worry me, especially given that that's likely why Edgar Wright walked away from the project, but I think I can give Marvel the benefit of the doubt. For now.

It occurs how weird it is that geniuses in Marvel are so vexed by not being considered top three. Like just being in the top ten smartest people in the world just ruffles their petticoats right up.

Smart people in marvel sure are prima donnas.

They have the drive and they're so closed to being unmatched. I'd heard Amadeus Cho had a similar experience with being told he was better than he was.

I'm glad someone else made the Pym/Bruce connection, because this is starting to sound really similar.

I find it hard to believe Tony is anywhere near Reed or Doom. I just don't see how anyone could be, but if there was someone else, I'd have to guess the mutant Forge, or someone else who just isn't normal.

[up][up][up][up] My personal favorite was X-Men's Doctor Nemesis. There's a panel in X-Club where he's talking to a reporter who just asked him about where he was on the list of smartest people in the world, and well...

My position on the list? My position is wrapped-round-the-throat of whichever costumed cretin came up with a "world's smartest heroes" ranking in the first pl— *is interrupted by exploding Atlanteans*

...I want Nemesis to show up in an X-Men movie. With his personality completely identical to his current comics characterization.

Caononically Tony has built armor and tech that rivals anything that Doom puts out. It's the fact that Doom also enhances his tech with sorcery that gives him an edge.

While Reed has considered Tony to be his equal for well, decades.

But I don't want it to be true! I like Tony somewhat, but I'm just irked by rich, white, attractive men who can do pretty much anything and everything, far outside of logic or reason, and who may or may not have like one fault, but their over-exaggerating fans and occasional writers think they're better than God and sex. No seriously, I actually do like the characters of Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne, but I find at most times they can easily be treated as over-the-top amazing, and I don't like that.

The smartest people list could use some more diversity. More people of color, more genius women (I know this was a list of men, though), and so on.

So is Black Panther aware he shares his name with an American black nationalist group from the mid-60's?

He is in the comics. At one point he changed his name to Black Leopard, and then to just The Panther, until he got over it.

Didn't Iron Man: Armored Adventures portray the Mandarin as a giant dude wearing black samurai armor along with his rings?

I wonder if that would be plausible for the MCU? Maybe he's so old that he's become like Anubis and just has the armor holding his soul in.

I've been saying for quite a while that an MCU Mandarin could've easily been done with a guy with arms of powered armor, with glowing rings of light on them that are triggers or release mechanisms for different types of energy, some of which may be Stark tech. We've already seen repulsors and the arc reactor itself take a ring shape, and I'd previously suggested Extremis bio bombs, miniaturized Jericho missiles, Stane's "neural impactor", Vanko's cords, and other things collected from Ten Rings associates. Hell, he might even use a working piece of Hammer tech, and absolutely must use something of his own.

T'Challa predates the Black Nationalist group, I think.

I miss Obie. Also, I wonder what the MCU history of the atomic bomb was.

[up][up]I was kind of irked that Hammer was an absolute failure. Rockwell played it well, but it was annoying that it added to the "Tony Stark is the only one who can do anything that truly works in the world of tech" feel. If only Vanko was more practical, things might be different, though.

I think the most dastardly crime Obie committed was taking away the pizza he had brought over from New York to eat with Stark. The fiend.

I'm sure Hammer did had stuff that worked. He was cited as being a contractor for the U.S. government, and apparently a successful one. It's just that Tony is much smarter than he is.

On the top ten smartest list: It also includes Doctor Doom, who is canonically Romani (or half-romani, I don't remember).

And I don't see what's the problem with having the Mandarin be magical. Seeing a straight-up Magic versus science match in an Iron Movie would be quite great.
