Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Not really. The Punisher is boring.

Aaaagh, this is awkward for me. Because I hate The Punisher. He's boring and lame and stupid and fuck you Garth Ennis.

But I love Tom Hardy.

My various fanfics.

I'd accept it if he was Mad. Furious to the Max. And if he had a sweet ride to take on the Road.

Fuck it, just watch the awesomeness.

I've read a lot of the hate on Twitter and there are people calling him misogynistic (wha?) and racist (how?) and sexist (what?).
I can totally explain my own thoughts on this matter if folks are interested but I understand if this is not the time/space/6th dimension/whathaveyou.

Or, alternately, his effortless shift to a committed romantic relationship with the most important female character in his life is symptomatic of Hollywood's general compulsive need for every movie protagonist to star in a monogamous Male-Female romance, regardless of its effect on the characters involved. See also: the Thor/Jane Romantic Plot Tumor.
Which is weird, because it's been how many MCU movies since we got a legit new couple forming? Certainly there were none between Avengers and Guardians inclusive.

I like Thor/Jane. It was set up poorly but they really do have good chemistry in Dark World.

It's a shame because I really, really wanted Martin Freeman to play Dormammu.

The role reversal would've been glorious.

He very well might! Seriously, what is there in Lee Pace's resume that suggested he'd play Ronan the Accuser?

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Well, Hardy's reservations on playing Punisher are because he's not a big enough guy for you' viewers out there.

Man. That sand was almost like some sort of dome.

You might even call it a... Thunderdome.

I'd like to make a passing mention to the fact Tom Hardy's Punisher would never match Thomas Jane's punisher. Man was born for that role.

But I support that casting, yes.

I remember Frank Grillo saying that he could've played the Punisher had he not accepted the role of Crossbones.

[up][up][up]I'm sure they could have him enact some other plot. Ultron is probably the most iconic Avengers villain and his mechanical nature makes destroying him for good virtually impossible.

edit: In the comics he was responsible for the second incarnation of The Masters of Evil. If they ever use him they could bring him back as The Man Behind the Man.

edit 2: Anybody else getting major Uncanny Valley vibes from this picture of Ultron?
