Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up] The part where he and the twins confront Cap, Thor and Tony. That was when we first began discussing his voice.

That scene is set a while after he escapes the party and gets his new body(he has 2 scenes after the party before this scene where he's restarting some Hydra robots to make a new body from the attempts Hydra did in creating their own Ultron and him meeting the twins). It's set right after they talk with Klaw and about 10-15 minutes before the Hulkbuster vs Hulk fight.

[up] I see. (Must resist spoilers. Is that one something we already knew?)

This movie will certainly prove to be eventful. What's its run time?

No. It's about fan reactions, not the actual events of the movie.

Ao U is 2 hours 21 minutes.

The spoiler is a sort off spoiler that doesn't reveal much aside from what Hydra was doing with the Sceptre before Tony takes it.

Hulk doesn't have a character other than "Angry", so I don't know how they could have done it otherwise.

Chris Pratt's AMA on Reddit

Quill and I are basically the same person. We were born in the same year. We loved the same movies. The same music. If I were kidnapped at 10, taken to space and based my ideology on the pop culture of 1979-1989 I would be Peter Quill.

The music is one the big things I'm looking forward to in Guardians 2.

The way classic funk and soul music was used as not just dance numbers, but also actual accompaniment to scenes as brilliant - the first scene we see with Star Lord is one of my favorite sequences in the entire MCU.

Just came back from the theater. Awesome movie. Maybe a bit too packed, but it was really awesome. I didn't notice the time go by.

The biggests surprises for me were Vision and Bruce/Nat. I didn't think I would care for Vision, but the more I think about it, the more I like him. Probably my favorite character. He doesn't stand out, but his serenity really won me over. The surprise romance was kinda out there, but it was really sweet. Kinda make me wish they would share a "solo" movie.

My disappointments were Quicksilver and the lack of Ultron's Oedipus complex, both being quite minor. Quicksilver wasn't bad, but certainly unremarkable. The last interesting of the new characters. Ultron was actually a really cool villain, so I can't complain much. It is just the idea of a robot with Oedipus complex that I miss, because I've always thought this was a great concept.

Hulk doesn't have a character other than "Angry", so I don't know how they could have done it otherwise.

He is heroic too. That is his second main character trait. He is angry at everything, but he is always saving whoever is in need. Hell, the very first Avenger comic pretty much starts with Hulk saving a train from a train-wreck. Twice. In his comics he does have a personality, to the point you can have whole stories without Banner even appearing.

OK, for those who've already seen it (or are just paying more attention):

I know there was a fake after-credits scene going about but is there a real one? And is it mid-credits or after?

Anyways, I really enjoyed the film. Fun, action packed, great character moments. I'm pretty satisfied.

And just like the last several mcu movies, I left the theater going "and why does the black widow trilogy not exist?" In particular, Natasha now has a friendly telepath on call, and she knows her head was fucked with in the red room, so... I mean, that's a gigantic plot trigger right there, because Nat is really not prone to flinching from taking the logical next step, cue up a movie worth of flashback.

In terms of exercising responsibility and care for innocent bystanders while still allowing for wanton destruction, that final battle takes the cake.

[up][up] It's a possibility.

I was pretty happy the film addressed her past and the Red Room, especially since we had our first big look at it back in Agent Carter.

They may be saving Ultron's Oedipus complex for either Hank Pym or Thanos depending on how they spin it. There's nothing stopping MARVEL from making where Ultron's personality came from explicit.

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong but Tony and Bruce were trying to integrate the Mind Gem's brain with the Ultron program they'd previously failed to get working, but they never specified where the original Ultron program came from, feasibly it could be Hank's uploaded brainwaves.

That was seriously nuts by the way. I mean, Tony is 100% correct that earth needs an actual defense system, or everyone is just going to die. But "lets haxxor the alien AI of unknown provenance and history to run one" is.. Nutters. AI is really, really dangerous. If you want to build one, step one is to do the code to matematical-proof standards, not pirate it of a harddrive you ripped out of an alien weapons system!

I *think* the vision worked out all right because Thor installed the value-system of his hammer into it. Which is still pirating code from alien weapons systems, but hey, the asguardians appear to have a solid handle on responsible coding. Or at least whoever did the work on the hammer did.

I mean, "Fix extremis, pour it in the drinking water" would be a better plan than this.

Well, I don't think the plan was Hook this alien brain to the Iron Legion. Because hey only had custody of the gem for three days, I think they were trying to integrate it with earth computing so they could study how to replicate that kind of intelligence.

Also, I wonder where Thor was planning on sending the Mind Gem too, given that Asgardian policy seems to be no more than one gem in each planet.

On a completely unrelated note, now that it's been confirmed that Thanos won't be the sole villain of Infinity war, do we think it would be a good opportunity for The Masters of Evil to finally turn up?

We'll soon have Baron Zemo in the mix. We've got Crossbones and Klaue, and I still want Justine Hammer to get himself a Whiplash suit. It doesn't look certain that the Enchantress will exist by then, but Tim Roth still has films in is contract, so you could be ballsy and bring back The Abomination, even though he is a REALLY old character in the MCU by this point.

I mean, very technically, the plan worked. The entire time Ultron was trying to protect the Earth. It's just that humanity is the Earth's worst enemy.
