Games with good fan translations/In English but not released in NA?

Well, I figure I'm set on biting the bullet on emulation for games that didn't come to the US thanks to No A's ass hating (The Wii 3 and FE 12) of recently. What else should I check out while I'm at it?

Current thoughts

• Mother/Earthbound series
• Fire Emblem 4, 5, 6 and 12 if it gets one that finishes, 3 if it doesn't.
• Seiken Densetsu 3

Any others? I want to avoid things that eventually did get a release (Persona 2 part 1) or (knowing Atlus), have a high chance of getting one eventually (Soul Hackers).

Note that Fire Emblem 2 also has a translation patch.

Anywho. For some reason, I can't think of that many even though I play a lot of patched games.. Possibly because many of the ones I would say, like DQ 5 and 6, are now available on in America.

Also, even though Tales of Phantasia is available on the GBA in both America and Europe, IMO you're doing yourself a disservice if you play that version instead of the PSX version, which has a translation patch as well (and an alternate patch on the way...one day.) Technically the SNES version is patched too...but I really prefer the PSX patch, as well as the PSX version itself.

Oh, I've also seen a LP of the Sailor Moon one, so no point in playing it personally.

Bahamut Lagoon is alrighty-ish. There's also the Romancing Saga series.

I was going to mention Bahamut Lagoon, but I'm not a big fan of it. It could be your cup of tea though. It's kinda like Devil Survivor, in that it's a strategy rpg in terms of how you move the characters, but when two opposing units (which really represent teams, except for the Dragon characters who fight alone) meet up, they fight a round of traditional JRPG combat.

EDIT: And I didn't know the Romancing Saga games had translation patchs. I'd played the Final Fantasy Legend games a bit (which is Saga in japan, and the first iterations of the series) but I didn't care for them. But the Romancing Saga games have some REALLY awesome songs. I particularly like this one, as well as the one below.

Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+ has had a couple of fan translations, and the most recent is quite staggering in its quality, even in the cutscenes (most of which are in English anyway). And as any Kingdom Hearts fan worth his/her salt can tell you, it's never been released outside of Japan.

Fatal Frame 4 (Wii)

One of the best. On top of the excellent script, they added a unique font set for each character's scenario. Not to big a deal but rarely do fan translations get any kind of attention beyond basic text hacking.

I love sRPGs.

The first Front Mission and the Gun Hazard spin-off have fan translations too. I'm not sure about the second game.

Yeah, Mother 3 is the best fan translation, but it was already named by the OP.

Actually, now that you mention it, I have to comment on the Fire Emblem fan translations: For FE4 and FE5, while properly translated (and well done at that) scripts can be easily found, the actual fan translation patches themselves are, well...The FE4 one is, aside from the ending and I think a single event in the endgame, complete, but the translation used is only decent, and the fan translators thought it would be funny to put in a few unnecessary jokes (I can think of two off the top of my head: one of said jokes replaces the untranslated endgame event as a filler, and the other is a short "funny" wordswap placed in an otherwise serious scene). However, it's passable. The FE5 one is actually bad though. Let's just say, as much as I love Yugioh Abridged, I should never hear Kempf say "In America". The patch is full of stuff like that.

The patches for FE1, 2, 3, and 6 are all great though. FE12 and the first TearRing Saga are both in the process of getting fantranslations as of this writing, but I don't know if you care about unfinished stuff.

I don't know of any other fan translations, so sorry if I just wasted your time.

I am kinda amused about how three different people pointed out that there is a Gaiden fantranslation.

It must be a sign from Mila! Go play it!

Fire Emblem Gaiden is FE2, the same way the game we westerners know as simply Fire Emblem is FE7 and New Mystery is FE12 (despite being a remake of the 3rd game).

If it helps, the numbering is only semioffical (if that), it's mostly used by fans as shorthand.

Numbering shows up on some Nintendo site actually. I recall putting it in the edit description for removing the "unofficial" qualifer from the numbering, but that's been swallowed by the history.

The PSP Haruhi Suzumiya game has a patch, but it's incomplete as of yet.

Zero Wing

(SOMEONE had to make that comment at some point. And it's the Mega Drive(European) version that had the lines anyway. Plus it's probably the single greatest case of a popular bad translation.)

And it only has to be good if a fan translation, if going by the thread title. Zero Wing has not been fan translated (then again, does anyone really WANT one?), so...

Also, I didn't realize that the FE 5 translation was bad. Then again, I never got past Chapter 2x.

But if we're going to go into "bad patches" then I have to mention Shin Megami Tensei 1 and 2. I finished 1, and did a little of 2. It's great to play them in English, and the translation patches aren't BAD...but they're some of the buggiest patches I've ever played. Maybe the games are just hard to make patches for, but I remember one part where I had to disable the patch (fortunately I didn't download a hard patch version) so I could buy a gun for Kazuya (the main hero). Interestingly, most of the worst bugs happened in the first portion of the game, so when you punched through that, it got better. Still not very encouraging for new players though.
