@secretist: so..you would have preferred catastrophic default to a deal that mostly favored republicans by an epic shitload anyhow and didnt even graze issues liberals wanted addressed?

Its interesting that the GOP got about 80%-85% of their demands and it still didnt please a sizeable minority of them. What gives?

Basic bargaining strategy is to ask for more than you can possibly get and grudgingly allow yourself to be moved closer to center from that point. Republicans understand this, and will continue to be unhappy with any deal they get and continue to ask for even more next time around, in exchange for giving back nothing more than allowing the government to continue to exist.

If I had to guess on what went through the Democrat naysayers' heads, I would guesstimate 'Well, we're stuck between a lemon deal and doomsday, but maybe if we refuse the lemon the president will be forced to intervene.'

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

Goes to show that "give a mouse a cookie and he'll ask for a glass of milk" applies especially well to Republicans.

The deal only minisculely effected spending ie there were no real spending cuts. There were cuts in the growth of spending that really count as increased spending in everyplace except Washington. link Look at the graph. If you squint the two lines easily become one. Spending cuts need to means a negative slope on a chart rather than a decreased slope. Also, bolded the names of my favorite Senators.

Voting no means that they can say to their constituents, "I oppose defense cuts/entitlement cuts etc. so I voted no on this bill"

They wanted the bill to pass, they just didn't want to look like they wanted the bill to pass.

I say vote every last one of them out for preferring the country default rather than moving the fuck on. Let them pay with their careers.

[never mind my question about bolded names]

Speaking as an SC resident, I'm a little surprised that Graham voted no. He's not up another round of elections until 2014 (as in after most peoples' mayfly-length memories would have faded), and I'm somewhat dubious about his claims of actually being a conservative (reasons for which are beyond the subject of this thread, but "Grahamnesty" would be on the list).

On the other hand, DeMint was an obvious "no" vote. He's made no bones about where he stands on the subject, to put it mildly.

@Whale: I don't know about milk and gas, but I do know that cotton prices are going up because the cotton growing region along the Mississippi got flooded. That being said, I wouldn't exactly blame the government for the heavy rain. tongue

@DG, Theres rising food and petrol (=gas/oline?) inflation in most/every country at the moment but Fox seems to think its the POTUS's fault. Heck, they would probably nail JF Ks assassination on him if they could.

Its interesting that the GOP got about 80%-85% of their demands...

Yes, but Establishment Republican demands (Boehner plan) are different from Tea Party plan (Cut, Cap, & Balance) for one.

The Debt Deal: Epic Disaster Ann Coulter

Immediate Release

Libertarians predicted Tea Party betrayal in January

WASHINGTON - On January 17, 2011, the Libertarian Party (LP) asked the 90,000 readers of its weekly email message to take a poll asking, "When will we know that Republicans successfully fooled the Tea Partiers?"

59% of respondents chose the option, "When they raise the debt limit without real spending cuts."

View the poll results here.

Chris Edwards of the libertarian Cato Institute recently pointed out that today's bipartisan debt deal, known as the Budget Control Act of 2011, does not cut government spending.

LP Executive Director Wes Benedict commented, "Libertarians apparently predict congressional deceit well. We knew this was coming long before it happened."

LP Chair Mark Hinkle added, "This debt deal only does one substantive thing: it raises the debt limit. Everything else is smoke and mirrors."

Hinkle continued, "I hope that in the future, those Tea Partiers who really want to see large cuts in government spending across the board will stop fighting their own interests by supporting Republicans. I hope they will support the Libertarian Party and Libertarian candidates instead."

I'm really surprised that Chambliss voted no, since he was on the gang of six and heavily involved in the negotiations.

@Secretist: No offense, But I'll consider Ann Coulter a reliable source about the same time I believe Donald Trump is a selfless, loving person.

so never.

As for the rest of it. Sorry if we didnt allow you to massively slash everything while doing absolutely nothing ro raise revenues.

I mean, Its bad enough that spending cuts are likely to put the economy in the shitter even more than it is now when we conveniently put a lot more people out of a job and drawing unemployment. Last I checked, putting people in every sector from military to government funded research to "save money" just means less tax revenue coming in.

If only we had a large enough group out there who realized that there is an answer to this whole issue that involves very small amounts of collateral damage...

You have to hike taxes and cut spending, you fools! Someday politicians need to wake the fuck up and realize that their philosophy isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to our nations problems. Sometimes you cut spending, sometimes you raise taxes, sometimes you do both.

Not only is it, its the single most popular news station in america.

Not that it stops them from claiming liberal bias in the media constantly. As for that poll, I could frankly not give the slightest shit what the Libetarian party feels about anything. If anything, theyre usually more insane than the republicans.

Its the same sort of logic you get from fundamentalist christians and republicans in general. Theyre both a large group and yet always claim to be a persecuted minority on the attack from all sides.

It conveniently lets them both play the "I'm big and powerful, listen to me" and "why does the world hate me,stop being mean to mee" cards.

Fortunately, most of the cuts in the current plan are delayed until after 2012. So it won't do much immediate damage to the economy.

To be fair, the Liberals favorite strategy is also to play the victim. Or rather "I'll just let these Republicans do tons of really nasty things while I passive aggressively try to look like I'm such a nice guy! SYMPATHY VOTE!"
