Don't read this, D Jay! That means you! Yes, you! Out with you! Skiddaddle! Shoo! No peeping! This is a SURPRISE, remember?

Also, a note to any mods: I realize that threads revolving around specific Tropers are, in general, forbidden. However, this thread was created as a direct offshoot of this one. I expressed a desire within the thread to do something nice for D Jay, and since things like direct monetary donations were... not feasible, I came up with a different, and less interceptable, idea. Several people expressed interest in this idea. Since discussing the whole thing over P Ms was not feasible, I decided to take it to another thread. In other words: Please don't lock me! We're only trying to organize something nice for another troper's benefit. :(

Now on to the actual stuff:

The plan, as it currently stands, is simple: Purchase Djay/Jordan a song from Songs To Wear Pants To, In the Style of Genesis/prog rock in general.

Why a song, and why STWPT? Well, I decided on a song because, obviously, our pal is a pretty big music lover. The STWPT guy, Andrew, is one of the few people I know who does song comissions—but he's also an amazingly talented musician, he's done songs in just about every genre you can imagine, and he's also surprisingly good at emoting through music.

His price range for paid songs is about $100-$200 per minute. So if we wanted about a 2-minute song, it would probably be wise to make about $300—his prices tend to go up depending on how close the deadline you set is and the complexity of what you're asking for, but we're not setting a big deadline and I wasn't thinking of too complex a request.

I've penned up a basic request, as follows:

We're a group of friends of various ages, locations, and thingamajigs who are looking to purchase a song for our friend Jordan. We're going to hold a little fundraiser to help us pay, so first we're curious as to what it would cost so we know how much we need to pay.

We're looking for a song in prog rock style. Think Genesis (that's his favorite band), Gentle Giant, etc. Length would be around two minutes—not too long, but long enough to get the point across.

We wanted to buy Jordan a song because he's had a bit of a rough life these past few years. Without getting into the details too much, he's had bad family issues along with some serious health issues. But he is a very strong person, who sought help for all of his problems by himself, and is now getting help from doctors, psychiatrists, and social workers and whose life is beginning to really turn around. We're all very proud of him for having the courage to get help, which is what inspired the idea to get him a song to cheer him on.

The themes of the song should be moving out of dark times into good ones, victory against impossible odds, life getting better, finding the strength within oneself to be awesome, and general self-esteem boosting things. You don't have to reference Jordan specifically (so other people can be inspired by the song, too), but here are a couple "personalized" things you could reference:

-Feasts (like, a banquet of good times, or... something)

-Everyone has a role to play in the story of life (he loves to write, and it's based on something from a story he wrote)

-Horror movies don't seem to scary in comparison to what we've been through (because he loves horror, in particular something called Marble Hornets)

There's no real dealine. This isn't a birthday present or anything, it's just a little gift based on how awesome and admirable we think he is.

Good song to use for inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk8qnzbd3Aw&feature=related

Obviously, though, we'd need to make money if we were to request such a thing. Which is basically the primary reason we're calling this meeting: To figure out how we could possibly make some, and/or to figure out who can donate stuff.

To begin with, 'I pledge at least 30 dollars of my own money to this project. More, if I can spare it.

I pledge at least 30 dollars of my own money to this project as soon as I find a way to do so without my parents noticing because there is less than zero chance of them sympathizing. In the meantime, I'll do whatever else I can— ideas, reasearch, etc.

That sounds like a great idea. I pledge at least 40 dollars of my own money to this worthy cause.

Wow; that's $100 pledged already.

Do you have Paypal? Because that's looking to be the best way to do this.

I know a way to get money into Paypal if you don't have a credit or debit card, but I don't know if it'll work outside of the US.

I'll pledge as much money as I can, but I doubt I'd be able to donate much T_T I'm only 1X, so money is quite difficult for me to come by. *

There are sites that can be used for fundraisers of sorts, like http://www.rockethub.com/ I could research into it and other similar sites, if we don't feel like sending money willy-nilly.

I kind of thought that this thread would be about helping him pay for his trip to the states.

Reasonably soon. I'm looking at that site linked to now. BUT I will keep you guys up-to-date.

If you send me your e-mail addresses, I can probably add them to the request, so that if this request goes through, Andrew (the musician) can keep you all in the loop.

Also, I would have loved to help D Jay buy something more substantial, but I don't think he has his own bank account, and if he did, it would probably be watched...

Well, I don't have a paypal and I'm under 18 so I'm not sure if I can get one, but if there's another way I could get the money to you I could pledge $30-$50. Maybe more depending on when the song would have to be paid for and how much it would cost.

I'll pledge $20 to start with.

For those who don't live too far from me, (I live in Ontario) I can use my paypal to donate whatever amount you're pledging immediately and you can snail mail me your money to even it out, if you're unable to access paypal.

If you guys are sending money via paypal, I'd recommend to not send it as a "gift." The paypal fee for amounts this low is barely anything, and should unforseen things happen to the funds sent, you're safer.

I am actually looking into setting up an account on this Rocket service. Sending money to random people on the Internet via Paypal is very sketchy, and it can get your PP account shut down if not done carefully. (See: What happened to Matthew of Brawl In The Family, when he tried to set up a donation drive after the Haiti earthquake. He had to go through Paypal red tape, though the donation did go through eventually.)

I will just have to figure out if Andrew will take it.

Since we have a number of pledges, I will probably send the request soon!

@Password: There are a number of ways to send money, paypal just being the most direct. You should be able to link it to your bank account, with your parents permission of course.

Do you live in the US? If so, you can buy pre-paid gift cards that work like credit cards. You just put money on them, basically; I believe you can do it with cash. Make sure you get a credit card-styled one, though.

Yeah, that's what I do. Gift cards that you pay for with cash, and then basically use exactly like a credit or debit card. Look in a post office, maybe.

Eh, I know of pre-paid credit cards but I haven't personally used them and don't know if you need to be of age to use them. Haven't heard if you can use giftcards in a similar fashion.

I can confirm that gift cards can be linked up to Paypal and subsequently used to make payments. Actually quite useful for us underage folk, I've been using it a lot.

On that note, I'll try to partition some of my allowance to help you guys out with this.
