Based on the trailer, it looks bad. Practically all the dialogue is cliche lines, and that's never a good thing.

Am I the only one who is getting massive "We want to copy Avatar" vibes from this?

The film isn't cliche, all of the things that ripped off its material and made them cliche were cliche. Is it John Carter's fault if it was ripped off to make Avatar?

[up]Not at all, I just fear that the marketing campaign will try to piggy back on Avatar's popularity and thus doom John Carter of Mars to an early and undeserved grave.

Nope, because what it does is it morally obligates everyone who defended Avatar's derivativeness to see the film. Everyone saw Avatar, millions of people actually praised the plot, turned off their brains and gazed at the pretty picture.

Well you know what, I see some pretty pictures in that trailer so be prepared to pony up some cash for JCM.

The problem is if they market it that way people may end up being disappointed, which is bad if Disney wants to start a trilogy/something out of it.

Also I feel "critics" will probably compare it...however unjustly, to Avatar. Most will probably not do their research and say its a bad rip off.

Anyway that was just he impression the trailer gave me. Guy goes to weird alien world, meets warrior women, saves world. Sure that is the basic plot...but for some reason I think the trailer could have conveyed it in a better manner.

Supposedly, we will get a different teaser before Captain America that fleshes out the plot more. This isn't confirmed but seeing that this is an international trailer, it won't be surprising.

Look. EVERY effects-heavy film will be compared to Avatar now. Starting getting jaded to these comparisons.

And you know what the sad part is here when it comes to Avatar? Its CG wasn't THIS believable. The Na'vi looked like they came out of a really pretty PS 360 game. This looks like everything exists. Damn, Pixar, this is a little more than what I expected out of you. Way to blow expectations out of the water.

Who wants to bet that most of the environments are green screened CG backdrops like Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland?

I'll be honest: I didn't really care about this movie until I saw the trailer. Now, it's totally awesome.

I had high hopes for this but good god do I hate the designs for the green martians. They're supposed to be towering, terrifying bug-eyed monsters: [1]

What they've shown of them here look like a cross between Protoss and goats.

Hey all I really said is the trailer had the same "feel" as Avatar:IE an epic Sci-FI romance...that should not try to take itself seriously. Sadly it looks like they are.

Ummm, isn't Mars supposed to be red? Like a brilliant, crimson red? Oh, you may call the character Deja Thoris, but that's not her. Also aren't Green Martians like Tars Tarkas supposed to be built like wrestlers? Boris Vallejo lied to me!

Yeah, I'm not impressed guys. I just don't think Disney should be handling something like this.

Theres sex and death and human grime in monochrome for one thin dime and at least the trains all run on time but they dont go anywhere.

No. The red soil is from rust (iron oxide.)

This is what Mars looks like.
