I LOVE THIS GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME

[up] I wouldn't call it standard FPS fare...at least going by the "standard" of FPS nowadays.

Let me rephrase that: Standard FPS fare, for the late '90s.

My inexplicable hype for this game died along with playing the demo. This game is an ordinary arcade-style FPS with bland bullet sponge enemies and an incredibly incidental plot, which is definitely not for me. I don't see the fun in this kind of games, personally.

Apparently the developers expect people to go gaga over an upgrade system they cribbed from Bulletstorm and the incredibly lame focus on environmental damage...

I'm thinking that the "lack of plot" in the demo might be caused by the fact that it's a demo.

In other words, they want you to enjoy the gameplay, while not spoiling the story. And notice how pretty much all the story we got was from the intro movie, which was already on Steam as a stand-alone trailer?

Besides, even if we don't get more plot in the game, it's not the first time I've played a FPS where the entire plot could be contained in the opening movie and/or readme...

Some FPS's don't even have that. (I'm looking at you, DOOM, Quake, Serious Sam...)

I played the demo today as well.

Pros:

  • No health regen
  • Bottomless Magazines
  • More than 2 "weapons," and by that I mean the different modes the two guns have, like shotgun for the bullet weapon, or lightning bombs for the energy weapon
  • Old school style, run & gun gameplay, with the story being explained outside of the levels
  • No stupid allies that follow you around and die if someone blows a bubble at them. At least that's what it seems like so far

Cons:

  • I find it awkward that there's no crouch key. Sure, it's probably unnecessary anyway, but I like being able to crouch.
  • As stated before, it's hard to tell what mode your gun is in. And it's also weird to have to switch between energy and bullets with the Q and E keys
  • Sprint is too short and takes too long to become available again if used for max duration.
  • I understand it's another cyberpunk setting, but I'd like to see more color. I don't like staring at endless gray and blue :(
  • There better be lots of enemy variety in the full game. The demo only had two different enemy types, and they only appeared in few locations.

Verdict? Sounds interesting, but I think I'd wait for reviews before picking it up.

Well, initial impressions from the full version:

1. Upgrade points require more Nano to earn.

2. Speaking of upgrades, the ones you couldn't get in the demo (mostly) now require you to install upgrades to unlock access to (the exceptions are in the combat suit tree, and those bring it in line with the two guns).

3. Still on upgrades, there are fewer upgrade terminals in the game than the demo.

4. The enemies seem somewhat weaker, both on health and attack.

5. The demo level? The big fight at the end is about, at most, 5 minutes away (and two or three is a better estimation) from the rest of the level.

6. The lack of story? The story mainly plays out through the cutscenes that play during the between level loading screens, although there is some plot advancement during the levels.
