Okay, I'm not quite sure this is the right place for this, but I think it is. I did a search, and I didn't see anything like this in other threads.

I'm trying to get published, as I'm sure most of the people on this forum are, and and it's just overwhelming. I have no idea where to start, and every time I find a website that looks like it might help, it turns out to just be general advice about avoiding scams. Which is important, but not quite what I'm looking for.

What I'm aiming to do specifically is to start publishing a web novel, like a web comic but with text instead. Thing is, I don't know anything about coding and creating websites or any of that.

Does anyone have any advice, or am I violating some unspoken rule by even asking about this?

Hello, welcome to Writer's Block. You're at the right place. As far as I know, you're not using the word "published" in the "get novel sold by a company" published (in that case, people would ask you to finish your novel first), but in the "get it on the Internet" published.

First of all, you're looking for something to host your story, right? Well, you have several options:

  • Build your own site.
  • Make a site on Webs.Com
  • Use Writing.Com, a site that I used to be a part of pre-TV Tropes. For a paid account, you can make a novel.
  • Use a blog.
  • Use Google.

Are you willing to use money or not? If you want to get serious, you should use your credit card or badger your parents for one if you're underaged.

I am willing to spend money, but in the context of "you have to spend money to make money." For example, I know that ads are used to generate revenue for a site, but I have no idea how that works. I'm going to take a look at those sites you posted, but I'm starting pretty much completely from scratch here. It's pretty much a miracle I know how to use forums.

If you don't know anything about web development then I'd suggest you just found a hosting service, and there are several of those (fictionpress and deviantart comes to mind). Using a blog can also work. Don't worry about getting a proper site until you have something people will want to read.
