Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I sincerely hope both the people who bragged about this being "Trump's 'Nixon goes to China' moment" and who doomsayed about this ruining the Blue Wave are kicking themselves to death.
Trump legit has no clue how to stop sabotaging his own efforts. It's as simple as that. The best thing is that he never even recognizes when he's fucked up, at all.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."I mean, if NK ever really thought the US was going to remove its troops then they were kidding themselves.
I'm not really surprised these talks fell apart. The writing was on the wall ever since they agreed to them in the first place.
They should have sent a poet.It would be a bad deal. An ugly deal. The worst deal.

Disgusted, but not surprisedTo think they had already minted the commemorative coin for the summit. What a waste of good metal.
There was always the chance that Trump's handlers would keep a tight enough lid on his impulses for a deal to be struck. For him to succeed at anything would still be a catastrophic misfortune for this country.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."And to be fair, Trump is the only US president who could speak to Kim as an equal.

Other Presidents were hampered by things like integrity and decency. Relatively speaking.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThe one thing consistent and reliable about Trump is that he will always make things worse, even when he's trying not to.

So when are we going back to North Korea chest thumping about its nuclear missiles again?
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.I give it a day or two.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI wouldn't be surprised if they do it today, as an open statement on the matter.
Weirdly enough today was actully a good day on that front, North Korea has been reported to have destroyed tunnels connected to its nuclear test site.
Still I called it, I said they’d pull out once they got the US to drop out of the military drills.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI am torn.
On one hand, I really do want a meeting with Kim. On the other, Trump would probably make it worse.
And, to be perfectly honest, there are upsides. We have, essentially, gotten North Korea to destroy some of their tunnels at no cost to ourselves. So that's a nice short-term gain.
Course, there's the long-term cost that means that they're going to be considerably less likely to come to the table later, at least without massive concessions beforehand.

It's worth repeating that we are, currently, at war with North Korea, and have been since the sixties. We never signed a peace treaty.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And to answer the question as to whether hostilities could be renewed with North Korea, no, it's not inevitable.
They should have sent a poet.Trump: "Maybe you [protesters] shouldn't be in the country."
Well, technically only South Korea is at war with North Korea, the South's allies were engaged in a UN authorized police action. Semantics, but its still important.
And those tunnels were destroyed because they were no longer structurally or economically viable.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. The US pulled out of the military drills, that’s not nothing, especially as the tunnels just lead to a defunct test site.
To be super technical the South and North don’t officially recognise each other and are thus not at war in a traditional sense, they’re officially two parties in an ongoing civil war from their own perspectives.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt's a war of words and has been for awhile,i only hope it stays that way and doesn't result in boots on the ground being deployed
New theme music also a boxBoots have been on the ground in South Korea for 50 years.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranJust to reiterate, a situation where US forces engage in combat in North Korea is massively unlikely. It's not something worth worrying about.

They should have sent a poet.Today's https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com/2018/05/24/day-490/ is up, but it's still early so I'll hold off on the full news dump in case there's more to dump later. In the meantime, though, there were a couple stories I wanted to share early:
1/ Trump said migrant children entering the country at the southern border are "not innocent," and warned that letting them in exposes the nation to increased gang crime. "They look so innocent," Trump said at a roundtable meeting at the Morrelly Homeland Security Center. He added: "They're not innocent."
2/ Trump insisted that he will not sign any immigration bill that emerges from Congress unless it includes "a real wall" on the southern border. Trump was responding to an ongoing effort in the House to force a vote on certain bills aimed at protecting young undocumented immigrants from deportation. Factions of the House GOP are at odds over certain provisions in the various bills under consideration, including whether or not to provide permanent legal status for "dreamers" and those covered under DACA.
House Republicans holds last-ditch immigration talks as internal showdown looms. House GOP leaders have temporarily halted an internal rebellion to force votes next month on protecting young undocumented immigrants from deportation while they negotiate with the GOP renegades to find a different path forward.
On looking at this last one, I'm once again struck by how every picture of Paul Ryan is either "Smug as Fuck" or "Sad Clown", like there's no middle ground with him.

I would have gladly have Trump have the Nobel Peace Prize, a pony, and his own commemorative coin if it meant North Korea as well as South Korea getting peace.
This is a tragedy for all people.

Oh thank god, Trump isn't being sent to negotiate anything of substance. All is well as it could be, again.
