Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Particularly since Bachmann seems to be in the lead so far.
What's precedent ever done for us?Poe's Law always applies with Bachmann.

I'm hopeful that Bachmann's only receiving so much attention because she's such a far-right-wing nut, and that it'll die down once the elections come around.
I have been watching the canidates the repubs are putting up. I would not touch the Republicans with a vote (as if we can trust the electoral college in the first place) much less a 50 ft pole with a lethal cattle prod attached.
The amount of exremist nut jobs they are putting up is quite honestly horrifically appalling.
Who watches the watchmen? As an outsider, I can only say that it appears Obama will win. It also looks kinda funny that people are calling him a liberal, yet he is no more centre-right than David Cameron...
Of course, I realise that the demographics and voting patterns would make the chance of a Democrat win 51-49.
Sorry Tom, but when the leading Republican candidate is going around spewing anti-gay hate speech, its hard for me to keep the kiddy gloves on.
Spew is a bit harsh, no?
But she does own that ex-gay clinic. She has signed a vow to the effect of "Gays are gay by choice and therefore aren't protected from discrimination and don't get to marry." Her husband, who would influence her and be influenced by her, has stated that gays are like Barbarians.
That's all I can think of.
So, not so much spew as "reek of"

No, its spewing.
"This is a very serious matter, because it is our children who are the prize for this community, they are specifically targeting our children." she's going around saying homosexuals are trying to corrupt our children.
Calling gay people Barbarians may as well just go out and say "enemies of god" or "faggots" its still the same insinuation.
Kerry did win! Just the democratic vote and not the supreme court

@ Tom. George Bush had some ideas that were good. He was not entirely batshit insane.
Kerry was way too soft an approach, he should have gone after the Swiftboating liars sooner.
Less insane, more incompetent to corrupt.

1: New tactic with the Swiftboat. Obama has had to deal with this shit for 4 years.
2: No presence. Obama can command a crowd.
3: Opponent was an Incumbent. Obama IS an incumbent.

Well, Obama seems pretty Swiftboat-immmune. He's been subject to as many illogical political cartoons as the next guy.
He has a slightly better chance of winning. After all, the incumbents usually stay.
Hopefully the leftists will be unsatisfied with the current happenings in politics and vote for Obama. Or at least, it's really determined me to go out and vote for him.
"Without a fairy, you're not even a real man!" ~ Mido from Ocarina of TimeI have a feeling its gonna be a more cynical shift from "Yeah lets vote for Obama because we believe in him!" (And placing such faith in him was stupid to begin with) and more "Yeah lets vote for Obama because the opposite is fucking terrifying."
^^ Historically with the left, those who are unsatisfied typically stay home. That's how turnout is in the US. Democrats are notoriously unreliable in their turnout and the above is one of many reasons why.

I wont argue that because its sadly true.
If you could vote for politics with you're cell phone, things would be quite different.

@Tom: I realize that. It's such a shame really. We don't have much room to complain if we don't vote. As for me, I wasn't 18 on time for Obama's election, so this will be my first time voting. That way, I have a justifiable reason to bitch if Obama isn't elected.

If the Republican party is not represented by it's radical wing, I see a curious lack of public disapproval among the rest of the party.
