Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What did I miss since eight hours ago?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Obama putting in work and it's not even the next morning◊
New Survey coming this weekend!Man that was pretty awesome night, god I hope that people actually watched and woke up.
But then again Trump cynicism is so much easier to sell.

Wikileaks posts hacked DNC voicemails.
Nothing that interesting in them.
Still this is an indicator that Wikileaks isn't stopping any time soon.

Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company. Why do they post if there's nothing interesting?
Because it fits the narrative of Bernie or Burners/Jill Stein voters/Gary Johnson voters of "corruption" and "both sides are equally bad".
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotedited 28th Jul '16 4:07:54 AM by Demonic_Braeburn
Any group who acts like morons ironically will eventually find itself swamped by morons who think themselves to be in good company.Anti-Trump Republicans are experiencing Obama envy after last night's speech. Just think, in an alternate future where the GOP embraced civil rights...they could have had him.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. There's violence in those countries? I mean, besides anything related to conflicts between the local drug cartels and each other, or between them and the authorities.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. The line between drug cartel and insurgent group is pretty thin in some places. Just look at the Taliban.
Some of those countries have murder rates that are only lower than active war zones.
EDIT: Looks like Trump is trying to Parody Retcon his Russia statements.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Nominally those countries have been at peace for 20-30 years, but yeah, weak rule of law means a high daily churn of violence, much like Mexico.
His statement wasn't as strong in context, but I'm not going to be a stickler for controversy and nuance when it comes to this asshole. Let him get every ounce of shit that's coming his way.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I'm seeing people saying "I'm not voting for either of these slimeballs", after Hillary gave a job to DWS. I tell them that not voting is potentially letting the far greater of two evils win and fuck everything up. I just hope there aren't too many of these people.
My older brother (no, not the nutcase; the older brother) said that Hillary is very much a manufactured candidate, but we can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
I also read an article a few days ago about how white supremacists and homophobes were celebrating the "fact" that they took over the Republican party. Have they? If they have, people need to really consider if they want Republicans to win. I want this takeover to backfire badly on them.
They have taken it over, yes. It's kind of shameful how the mainstream media seems to be ignoring this.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"and : They took it over around the time that American voters committed the unforgivable crime of electing a black man as their President, really. It's only (relatively) recently that the Republican party has stopped trying to pretend that they're not a collection of racist, sexist, homophobic jerkbags whose preaching of traditional family values is an insultingly transparent fig-leaf for wanting to turn back the clock to the time when gays were burned, blacks were lynched, and the family was utterly subservient to The Man Of The House, lest he dispense some tough love.
(angry? who, ME!?)

Trump's convention boost is in line with historical trends and is actually on the small end of the scale.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. So Trump's surge is actually normal? Thank goodness.
You know, this election is really stressing me. I just want Hillary to win so badly and hope that people voting for Jill Stein (like some people I know are) won't ruin it for her and elect Trump, like what happened in 2000. I really can't stop thinking about it.
... I miss when all we had to worry about was Mitt Romney firing Big Bird.
Not necessarily; we have to see whether or not Clinton gets a bounce; if she doesn't, than this election is mirroring 2004, where John Kerry didn't get a significant convention bounce.
Frankly, I don't understand why your elections take so long. Sure, the US is big, but... Seriously? In this day and age, an election could easily be over and done with in a month. Two, at most.
These lengthy campaigns can't be good for anybody. <_< If fatigue doesn't set in, stress does. Not to mention time taken away from, you know... governing.
Inertia, mostly - never had to set a time limit on when campaigning was allowed back when the fastest internet was a guy on horseback and mass media wasn't really a thing. Also, First Amendment probably shortstops any actual hard limits.
If we wanted to shorten the timespan, we could move the primary closer to the general. While it's true that there's not really any legal way to limit how much the candidates are allowed to campaign for, the way our system is configured now does still mandate that our election must take at least half a year.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Yup. That's why i've been in favor of a broader "Elections Amendment" or a "Fair Speech Amendment" which would allow the government to set limits on campaign-related speech as long as these limits were not found to be unduly burdensome to a political party. It would solve Citizens United and also help contain the election beast in one fell swoop.
This is probably one of my favorite pictures of all time◊
New Survey coming this weekend!
