Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Don't try to put words in my mouth. Obviously there are cultural and social factors, but to a large extent those are governed by economics. People who are happily employed and housed, with families and social ties, are far less inclined to murder each other in street brawls no matter what their social and cultural backgrounds. Football fans excepted, apparently.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Football or soccer? This is the U.S. politics thread...
note
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)I would agree with you about normal gangs, but from what I understand biker gangs are more of a cultural thing. I should point out that of course the vast majority of bikers or motorcycle enthusiasts do not murder each other in stupid gang wars.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom. What is it with Waco, Texas these days?
99% of them don't, at least.
Thumbs up if you get the reference.
Living up to the name?
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSadly, it's pronounced "Way-co" not "Wac-o".
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. Is it the same Waco that had that crazy cult?
And the fertilizer plant explosion.
You mean the one that was slaughtered by the FBI and ATF over allegations of child abuse? That's the one.
(Granted, the allegations were probably true, but y'know, it's hard to prove that when everyone involved, including the children, is killed in the raid.)

"Slaughtered" is... one way to put it, I suppose. A nutjob cult was stockpiling illegal weapon and, as nutjob cults are wont to do, choose to fight rather than go quietly when the authorities tried to crack down on their nutjob cultishness. The fire that eventually destroyed the compound (and killed dozens of people in it) was unfortunate, but all indications are that it was either started deliberately by the Branch Davidians or accidentally by the FBI, so claiming that the Davidians were "slaughtered" is... let's go with "contentious", at best.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. The fertilizer plant explosion was in West, Texas. Yes, that is the name of an actual town. It's near Waco, but didn't happen there.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Pretty cuddly as far as doomsday cults go. But the government wasn't about to let another Jonestown happen, and Koresh was preaching the same shit.
I'm a skeptical squirrelFemale Congresional Staffers are not allowed to meet alone with male bosses. While I do believe that this is defiantly not helping the woman's career prospects, I disagree with the assertion that it is some kind of plot to maintain the patriarchy. It is just politicians being spineless and afraid of scandal. The fact that it reinforces patriarchy is considered acceptable by these people, but it is not the end goal.

I would laugh so hard if someone did a civil forfeiture on the Kochs.
It'd never hold up against the shitstorm of lawyers they'd hire. But it's legally possible.
Took the words right out of my mouth
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom. Then there's the Susan G. Komen. It's run by a Texas lobbyist who whores out her dead sister's name to the tune of a half mil per year.
It makes money, it's ordained by God. That's it.
I'm a skeptical squirrelKomen lost a lot of its clout after that planned parenthood fiasco, though. Even when they backtracked. I haven't heard their name nearly as much in the following years, and i have an Aunt who is a survivor.
Louisiana's "religious freedom" bill died in committee, but Bobby Jindal issued an executive order to make it law.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Anyone want to take odds that rightwingers who whine about Obama's executive orders so much will do the same here?
