The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, you'd tell married heterosexual couples that they can no longer visit each other in the hospital. That'll go over pretty well.

In what way is that progressive?

Supreme Court rulings on stuff like gay marriage tend to follow the pendulum rather than drive it. (Not that the gay marriage thing isn't pretty much a certainty at this point; Kennedy's on board and Roberts may be.)

And if the Court kills Obamacare...I feel for the red-staters. (Fighteer? Doesn't Pennsylvania have a Republican-dominated legislature?)

[up][up],[up]It's a radical (in the sense of "far-left") idea, not a progressive one. "Abolish marriage as a legal institution entirely, and just let people do whoever they want."

[up]How will the governor set up an exchange if the legislature says "fuck you?"

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)

He probably won't. I'm pretty sure Tom Wolf only won because people hated his predecessor.

I don't think the legislature has any choice in the matter. And I have insurance through my employer, but I would be saddened for those who don't.

[up] Wolf has publicly stated that he'll set up an exchange if SCOTUS nukes federal subsidies.

Doesn't the legislature have to approve the exchange though? It's still Republican controlled.

Yes, the legislature had to approve. A lot depends upon how many roots Obamacare puts down until then. Enough roots and you'll see bills extending subsidies and the like from Republicans - we are already seeing a few in the Senate.

So apparently Texas Republicans are paranoid that the U.S. Military's "Jade Helm" training exercise is a cover for Obama to take over Texas.

Jade Helm's basically a training excercise between over four divisions of the military in the American Southwest to help train soldier for irregular warfare across divided cultures.

The interesting thing about the Full Faith and Credit clause is, some court-watchers are saying that even if the Court doesn't rule for full marriage equality, it might rule that states have to recognize any marriage made in a state where it was performed legally.

I don't see why that isn't the case already. But if the court reaffirms it, it basically makes the marriage restrictions moot.

Well, it would still mean that, depending on where you live, you might have to travel out of state to sign your marriage license. So it would still be an extra-hassle for gay couples, but not an unpassable road block.

Right, it's not like a lot of straight people don't go out of state to be wed anyway.

RE: Jade Helm

The best rebuttal I came up with (that even a semi-wingnut accepted as a valid point) is that what sovereign nation in their right mind would accept a foreign power coming in to train there as part of some wargames? Even a staunch ally would balk at that kind of proposal.
