Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That is indeed the belief of many of them, that "poverty" is really just some kind of elaborate scam.

Trump delenda estYeah, if you're not living under a bridge you're not poor enough for government aid. And even then you're probably just panhandling.
Oh really when? What if the bridge collapsed due to lack of maintenance?
Keep Rolling OnThing is congresspeople do work very, very hard, but most of that (along with the supershort work year) is down to the fact that they're in fund-raising mode 100% of the time.
They don't put in a lot of the work for doing the job, in some cases (there are some who do, of course, depending on where you are in the committee system and whether you're attached to something you're passionate about), but they put in one great hell of a lot of work to keep the job.

One of the problems congresscritters have is that they spend something like half their time traveling, which is much less fun than it sounds. Spending three to four days a week flying to and from Washington is exhausting. Their lives would be much easier if we could implement that virtual congress idea.
Back in the day, congresspeople lived in DC full time, but the invention of rapid transportation ruined everything.

Where's the FOX news bit saying that this proves he's a Muslim and is trying to destroy America?
Oh really when?Yep. The workers that business are trying to hire happen to have lives and needs. If a job does not pay enough, well, that destroys most of the interest right there. Those looking for jobs don't act like a liquid. Just because a job is available does not mean that it will be filled if there are too many downsides (and "this job won't help me support my family" is a huge downside)
There's also the problem that the base requirements for most jobs keep going up, and it's impossible to keep up if you are above a certain age or below a certain income.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016I'm surprised Catholics are 50,...they used to be solidly Democratic and pretty much were what gave Democrats the swinging Northern states before FDR came in.
One word: Abortion
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016And in the interest of this thread staying calm and rational I'd like to suggest that we keep it to one word and now move onto a different subject.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranEvery little bit of self-implosion by the GOP is just deliciously schadenfreuderific. It's like manna from heaven.
Jumping the gun a bit, aren't you?
"I'd like to be a tree." - FluttershyConsidering that abortion is a banned topic and people tend to reply to other people unless it's suggested they don't, I'm gonna say no.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThat picture might be damning if the weapons she was talking about were actually designed for war or used by "most mass shooters".
As such, they're completely ordinary semi-autos that superficially resemble automatics, and are indeed designed and most often used for sport shooting against inanimate objects. And most mass shooters don't make national news because they use weapons that are either much less interesting or already illegal.

@Silasw: When abortion comes up in this thread in the context of something else, such as the voting trends of Catholics, we usually keep the discussion civil.
Furthermore, as I understand it, the Banned Topics list applies only to opening threads on the subject (Mods, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). So long as it doesn't become a derail or off-topic, we shouldn't be afraid to answer an on-topic question by noting that abortion is a large part of what encourages Catholics to vote Republican.

As well as a huge misconception in regards to the Hobby Lobby case.
"I'd like to be a tree." - FluttershyOn the article about the Congressman talking to the woman in poverty, I don't like how so many of the comments are going on about how she was "irresponsible" to have children in her situation.
They act as if everybody plans to have their children exactly when they happen and it's even more annoying when you think about that a lot of them don't like the use of birth-control at all, would make abortion a non option if they had the power, or if she gave them up for adoption or put her kids in foster care they would say she was just further burdening an already strained system.
Thinking about all of this, the only option these types would actually like is if this woman, who is married, and others like her just never had sex, and the fact that they think that's a reasonable thing to say to married, people or any adult period, is maddening. Extra irony sense they're also the types to constantly go on about "personal liberty/responsibility".

A Congressman Questioned A Woman Living In Poverty And Revealed A Lot About Himself
Poor working mother questioned about her dependence on the government by a guy on a government salary of $174,000 and only works 132 days of the year. Seems legit.
What is the GOP even "investigating"? That the poor aren't really poor so they should just STFU?
