Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I doubt Romney truly cares about abortion. His statement over how he's not gonna be anti-abortion further proves that he just goes with the flow. If the flow is anti-abortion, he'll go anti-abortion. If the flow is pro-abortion, he'll go pro-abortion. He's an Etch a Sketch. In fact, if he's elected, I doubt he'll ever do anything about abortion. He'll focus entirely on tax cuts for the rich and more wars overseas.
Local politicians have more of an impact on the average citizen than the President, or the Senators, or the Representatives.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.smearing signs with shit? really?
this is just giving them "look what obama supporters are like!" ammo. Nice Job Breaking It Dumbass.
I'm baaaaaaackI've always been amazed that campaigns don't have people pose as opponents of their campaigns and say or do ridiculously hateful stuff. You'd think that'd be a winning campaign trick.
You mean they don't do that? Okay I know Romney and Obama probably don't do that but I imagine some campaigns do that.
Actually, I think it's too easy to find out of someone's doing that to deliberately sabotage the opponent. I mean hell, look at Occupy Wall Street and the accusations that the police or others would send in deliberate saboteurs. It only takes one guy being caught to cause such accusations to pop up every time thereafter, even in cases where it's a genuine crazy doing shit. And your personal credibility is tanked for the rest of your life. So yeah, it's smart if you're only looking at short term gain. Long term, way too much risk.
Now, I'm not saying it's never happened before, it's just that if they do it too much they run the risk of being caught. And the consequences of such are pretty dire.
Tea party might. I wouldn't be surprised if they did this.
I'm baaaaaaackUmm, it HAPPENED in 2008. Remember the falsified attack on a teenage girl by a black Obama supporter? The one they could tell was done in a mirror because the scars were written backwards?
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this. So, someone smeared a Romney sign with shit, and then someone defaced it. Ba-dum!
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Smeared a Romney sign with shit? Departmentof Redundancy Department at work!
I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.Okay okay, that's enough making fun of the Romney campaign.
It isn't exactly fun though. It's akin to checking an exam paper full of incorrect answers.
I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.Well, yeah. It's just getting depressing now. We're at the point where Onion News articles are actually becoming true despite being intended as satire.
Yet another reason I'm voting for Jill Stein. I just cannot, in good conscious, vote for Obama.
Honestly, if any other candidate was president, would he or she be able to prevent the law from being enacted?
Nope. Which is why I'm voting Obama anyway.
Nope because they are all Illuminati/Templar/Zionist/alien/Muslim/robot/communist puppets! lol

I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.It was passed overwhelmingly (93-7 in Senate, higher majority than the recent Iran resolution).
It was that important to Congress. You think they would adjourn after passing such a law?
Pocket Veto only works if there's only so many days left in session.
Jesus Christ, this is bullying. I'd say there was a regulation against this, but I'm not so sure now and even then there's no insurance that it will be enforced.
US employment law operates under the basis of "At-Will Employment". Unless it's specifically stated otherwise in your employment contract(assuming you have one), your employer can fire you for any reason, or even for no reason at all. By the same token, an employee can quit for any reason or no reason, unless otherwise stated in a contract. There are exceptions that violate the law*, but it's up to the employee to prove that they were fired "unjustly", if they think such a thing is the case...
So long as none of his employees are under contract, David Siegel can fire any or all of his employees because "the wrong president" was elected. And since all the email really says is "if taxes go up, you are all getting fired," it's hard for me to see this turning into "he fired me because I voted for Obama"(since he'd likely be laying off entire departments rather than just singling out people)...
That said, I think Siegel sending that email was actually a pretty decent thing to do... If you're going to get fired because the boss is going to close up shop if his candidate doesn't get elected, wouldn't you like to know before the election so you can go about finding yourself a new job? Those employees should be happy they got ~1+ month's notice...
You don't consider it being a form of voter intimidation a problem? The point seems less to be about firing left voters than it is about intimidating them into staying home while encouraging on the fencers to vote right.
Yes, him giving them warning is 'decent,' in the sense that someone telling you that they're going to hit you in the face with a bat before they actually do it is more decent than someone who just comes up and slugs you one. Doesn't make it justifiable or laudable.
This is a guy who built what Wikipedia calls 'the second-largest and most expensive single-family house in the United States.' And he's telling people that the Obama administration a second time around is going to be so definitively bad for the economy that he will be FORCED to fire mass amounts of people, without much to back that theorizing up.
Think about that contrast for a second and tell me in what way he's being fair to his employees.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.Siegal is an idiot if he's closing up shop due to concerns about a second Obama presidency.
Of course he's not going to close up shop. It's a bluff, it's like O'Reilly threatening to quit his job if his tax rates go up. They don't believe the shit they're selling, they just want YOU to believe it.
Mmm, pleasant note to bid the forums a good night on. <.<

Thank you protesters for giving Fox News tomorrow's rant material. You've been so helpful.
